Layton pledges $591 million for Montreal transit:

MONTRÉAL - Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton pledged an investment of $ 591 million over four years for Montréal’s public transit system today.

Speaking in downtown Montréal, the NDP leader outlined details of Montréal’s share of the NDP’s plan to invest in transit through a dedication of one cent per litre of the existing federal excise tax to public transportation, as well as revenues from making the big polluters pay through a cap-and-trade carbon pricing system.

“We welcome the debate on carbon pricing and climate change,” said Mr. Layton. “There is no greater crisis facing our planet and our country. Investments in green solutions are desperately needed.”

“For Montréal alone, our plan to dedicate one cent per litre of the federal gas tax to transit would mean $315 million over four years,” said NDP MP Thomas Mulcair (Outremont). “And Montréal’s share of the transit revenue from our cap-and-trade plan would mean an additional $276 million over four years.”

The NDP investment of $591 million over four years is the equivalent of purchasing almost 1400 new buses for Montréal or 267 new subway cars. This is new money that can be used for local transit priorities, as determined by local transit authorities.

“Montreal’s public transit system is in urgent need of investment, said Anne Lagacé Dowson, NDP candidate in Westmount-Ville-Marie. ”In our community, several light rail and tramway projects have been in the works and this NDP plan for federal support is crucial to making them a reality."
