Re: Alvaro Antonio Orozco Please quote file number SV07-6047592

Dear Ms. Finley,

I am writing today to support Mr. Alvaro Antonio Orozco’s request for a stay of removal on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

Mr. Orozco is a 21-year-old gay man who fled from domestic abuse and a difficult future as a gay man in Nicaragua. He has been in Canada for two years. His claim for asylum was denied because the IRB member who heard his case didn’t believe he was gay. This is particularly upsetting for Mr. Orozco because he chose to come to Canada for protection in light of Canada’s support for gay rights.

As I am sure you are aware, life for gay men in Nicaragua is very difficult, they face intolerance and extreme homophobia. Same sex relationships have been criminalized and even gay rights advocates may face prosecution. Out of concern for Mr. Orozco’s safety, Canada must not return him to Nicaragua.

I urge you therefore to intervene on Mr. Orozco’s behalf and grant him a stay of removal humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

Sincerely yours,

Bill Siksay, MP
