I am going to be coming to Montreal next week and am hoping for advice on things to do (theater, museums, comedy, etc.) that are walking distance or very short cab rides away from the biodome area.  I can only find one hotel online that is really close to there but its expensive, are there more around there? Also, any plus sized clothing stores in ( Read more... )

Aye yai. The biodome is, by Montreal standards, "in the middle of nowhere." (This is why the Expos got moved. No one would go since it was "so far away.") This means it takes a 15 minute subway ride from there to get downtown. On one line. It's not far but Montrealers are spoiled and expect everything, including hole in the wall cafes, unique bistros, comedy clubs, bars catering to six different social classes, and multilingual theatre within three blocks of a metro station, preferably no more than three stops from their personal apartment.

For what you want, take the metro, green line, getting off at St Laurent metro, and walk up St. Laurent, as in up the hill, and you'll find lots to do. Unless you have something against subways. Ours are really easy to navigate and pretty crime free compared to other cities.

I'm amazed how often if something isn't RIGHT NEXT TO A METRO people are all "omg". Like Marche Centrale might as well be in outer space according to my non-driver friends. I have a friend who won't live more than three blocks from the orange line. Not just any metro. The orange line. I have a group of friends I rarely socialize with because getting them to do anything outside the plateau... christ you'd think I'd invited them to camp in Chibougamou. People who were raised in the city seem to be the absolute worst about this.

C'mon, admit it, you know people like this too!

Marché Centrale is very unapproachable on foot. I do go there occasionally for things and find myself plodding through parking lots with drivers narrowly missing picking me off every few minutes. Unpleasant.

Is it not super accessible, I'll give you that, but people won't even bother trying.

West Islanders usually aren't such wimps about this though. They're pretty good usually about trekking!

Haha. THIS.

I'm originally from Toronto, by far one of the WORST public transit systems in the world. I just recently talked to someone about where I live (near Snowdon) and where I work (right outside De Castelnau) and how its OMG SO FAR FROM WHERE I LIVE OMG FAR. She asked me if I had a car because OMG that is so far to take the metro. Um. I get on at Snowdon. I go to the Blue line. I get off at De Castelnau 20 minutes later. LOL.

The last job I had in Toronto, it took an hour and a half by car to get to, OR if I was feeling particularly inefficient, it was 2 hours and 45 minutes by metro. Fun times.
