Montreal to Border (Lacolle) without a car...

 Hey Montreal!

I need to go down to the border from Montreal to renew my student visa. (But I don't have a car...)

So quick q: Is there a way to go down to the US/Canada border at Lacolle without a car? I'm thinking something like Greyhound or some other form of public transit? I don't feel as safe taking up a rideshare, but if that's the next best option, I'll take it. But for now, does anyone know how to get there otherwise?

I "heard" on an online thread posted back in 2004 that someone can just take the Greyhound to Burlington, let's say. Said traveller gets off at the border (therefore truncating the official trip to VT), do their border business and wait for the next Greyhound bus to come along and hitch a ride with them on their way back to Mtl. This seems pretty straightforward enough, but does anyone have experiences with this or have thoughts/opinions?

Thanks is advance!
