Post-consumerism

After reading some posts about animal welfare, ecofriendly living, and the likes, it got me thinking about the general state of society. Regardless of what your stance is on veganism vs omnivorism, capitalism vs statism, democracy vs totalitarianism, and all the other ways to divide our beliefs in how society should be, I would like you to think ( Read more... )

Veganism, local+seasonal food and recipes quikchange July 18 2010, 17:12:45 UTC
I'd be much more inclined to eat a vegan diet if somebody who knows more than I do and cares more about it created a list of recipes that I could use to prepare a week's worth of meals that will provide me with adequate nutrition while using only ingredients that can be obtained locally (ideally within 100 miles but I'll accept anything grown within QC, ON and the Northeastern US). Of course, since the availability of those ingredients changes over the course of the year, I'd probably need this list to be updated every few weeks or so. Any takers?

I am working on it, believe it or not. I am just about finished the technical aspects, now I am working on harassing the cooks and cookbook authors that I know for help.

Ah, nothing special, just a joomla site with a cookery plugin. The website will actually be focused exclusively on supper (5 meals a week), at least at the inception. Stage one will be to get 52 weeks worth of recipes up. Stage two will be to start re-organizing them to be seasonally appropriate (give or take, it will be a global site, ideally), and then stage three will be to start to try and become hyper-local, if not for everywhere than for southern Quebec and eastern Ontario. Eating locally through the winter there can be a pain in the ass, but it is doable, especially if you have some space to grow your own veggies in the winter.

I look forward to this. Please post it on the community wall when you have it going. It's not that I'm vegan, and frankly vegan diets do not agree with me, but I'd like to decrease my animal (or at least meat) products to the minimum.

Also, I wanted to thank you for participating in the discussion. I've noticed that many people had much to say about the use of animals in our current lifestyles, and I appreciated reading about your point of view. Thank you!
