Thank you for putting this question out there. I'm a (fairly obsessed,) sewer myself, but I've always walked by those St. Hubert stores without going in. I've always wondered if they have good stuff and good prices (though I'm more interested in fabric and notions than patterns.)
Maybe I'm worried that every scrap of fabric will be tacky like those wedding and prom dresses in so many St. Hubert windows? I dunno...
I must admit that I do almost all of my fabric shopping at Fabricville (locations all over, including one downtown at Ste-Catherine and Bleury.) It's not the *best* fabric store ever, but it's really quite decent. The least dysfunctional Fabricville location I've been to is the one on Taschereau in Greenfield Park, but the Ste-CathxBleury one is OK - and there is a new one up in the area of the big orange - on Paré I think - but I haven't been there. Fabricville also has the Club Elite program: for $15 you get a year's membership that gets you about 20 per cent off (often more,) on everyday purchases there. For my purposes/purchases, the Club Elite membership usually pays for itself in a visit or two. There is most probably better than Fabricville out there, but I haven't taken the time to find such a place in Montreal
( ... )
Some of the big pattern companies - the brands you will find at Fabricville - have retro style collections. They took actual vintage patterns from their archives and re-tooled them (sizing, instructions, materials, etc.,)
I bought a pattern for a 50s style dress years ago - it was a buy-one-get-two-free sale on patterns - but I haven't gotten around to using it.
I haven't seen patterns on St Hubert, but I've only been to a few stores there. I'd recommend getting the pattern at Fabricville (or online, I recently discovered there are some amazing pattern designers selling their patterns online) and the fabric on St Hubert.
