Travel/health insurance for one year?

I want to apply for a one-year visa to a foreign country and the visa application states that I need to have proof of health insurance that will cover me while I'm away. I called Blue Cross and they told me that I can get coverage through them for up to one year but if I stay even ONE DAY longer than one year, I'm pretty much screwed because I will have no coverage at all, because my medicare card will basically be cancelled after that (or something to that effect), and it's something you can only do once every 7 years as well. Since I'm not sure if I'd want to extend my stay after one year, this doesn't seem like the best option for me, so the lady at Blue Cross suggested that I check out health insurance that's independent of the RAMQ/medicare. The only trouble is, I have NO IDEA where to look. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? Any ideas or suggestions?
