Broken electronics disposal

What does one do with mostly broken/unusable electronics? It seems that putting them in the regular garbage would be somehow wrong. Is there a way to recycle them? I see broken scanners (which is one of the things I have) listed for free on Craigslist fairly often, but do people actually taken them?
