So instead of answering the obvious question of why i havent been updating recently and giving you the obvious answer "meh ive been busy, preoccupied, absent minded...not necessarily in that order", I guess ill start with the now and work backwards.
This semester is finishing up real fast. From my last entry today, a lot has happened in such a short span and yet my poor attention span to this blog has neglected to report on them. But oh well I'll report what I can.
Despite it being my last semester here at FIU, and not necessarily my hardest, it does seem a bit drawn-out and not because of academics but just all this other little annoying things and psychological stuff going around me that I can't seem to control. So much has been going through my mind, such as the fact that I may need to finally accept the fact that I may have to go to osteopathic medical school (since none of the MD ones I've applied to have asked to interview me). I've had two interviews so far at two osteopathic schools - Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida, and Nova Southeastern University. I would talk about my interview experiences from both but thinking about this is quite exhausting and so to make long stories short - I am currently waitlisted at LECOM - Bradenton and will hear from Nova probably next week or so.
I know I sort of blogged about my frustration with the med school app process and I should have done so in a separate blog, but I guess here in this paragraph will have to do. Quite honestly, I hate this process because I think my MCAT score sucks, and that I haven't done enough or much relevant volunteer/community service activities. I honestly really think I should and would be happier talking a year off to improve everything. And as much as I hate to admit this, I can't because...my parents don't agree with that and think that I should go to osteopathic school or the islands. And now that makes me think if this is what I really want....really want to do. Do I really want to do the former or am I doing it to make them happy?
This is a really confusing and frustrating time in my life and more so than graduating from high school and going to a somewhat local university like FIU (to save money) b/c my decision to do osteopathic medicine or allopathic medicine will have looooong term implications and effects for the rest of my career, beyond residency, specialty.
But you know what I think my problem is? The fact that I can't accept/embrace the DO profession. Are they not just as valid in being Doctors as MD/allopathic physicians? I'm still caught/hung up on that stupid pre-med notion of DOs being different/inferior/limited match or residency opportunities. I just need to be confident in the fact that things will change in the coming decade and that it will become more and more recognized.
As for my MCAT score, yes I did take it back in January and got my score back...and don't want to talk about it anymore. Bright side is that my score for bio section went way up but the other two suffered...so I'm still (I think) in a bad position to be considered for MD school and I doubt USF med school would want me anymore.
Why am I dejected about that? Because I feel deep down inside the issue isn't the fact that I'm a bad test taker, but that I know I prepared for tests like those half-assed and I have regrets...but can do nothing but look forward.
So now its come to this: Have I failed myself? My family for not fulfilling the original reason for coming to FIU? I mean it was because of that FIU-USF COM 7/8 year program alongside the scholarships that I came here. Well my answer is no...so what if I didn't fulfill that...maybe it wasn't meant to be. I don't think I have...I'm still going to graduate and I'm not in debt.
Even weirder is that many of my pre-med friends have applauded me for my two interviews at DO schools. And yet I still to myself that I've failed for not living/reaching my potential, to get an interview at least at one MD school. I've felt that way since this year started...regrets and all...but is it subjective? I mean, two interviews at DO schools? Am I that bad? Maybe I just haven't really fathomed how cutthroatly competitive people are trying to get into medical school...?
Not much else to talk about...except SoBe Wine and Food Festival. Yes I did go last week, and it was exhausting work...but mostly fun. I saw Rachael Ray, Jamie Oliver, and this former supermodel of India named Padma Lakshmi...pictures and more are on my facebook. School is ok...classes are meh, senioritis has set in so much I feel numb with apathy, many of my classes being the grade by papers or presentations. Will report more after I get some sleep...
Oh and on the bright side, I was able to get the whole Super Smash Bros. Brawl Soundtrack. The music spans like 5 or so CDs...over a gig of music....all of it nothing less than beautiful...epicgasmic...
