Happy Mother's Day

May 08, 2016 20:04

I am all for inclusivity on Mother's Day and recognizing the variety of nurturing roles women play beyond motherhood. I'm down with that.

But if I have to look at one more post saying that taking care of a god-damn dog is the SAME THING as raising a child, I'm gonna flip my shit. For real.

Do I think that caring for animals isn't important? Nope, I didn't say that. But it is not the same fucking thing as raising a child. Not even close. Not even in the same ballpark. It's kind of like saying, "Look at me, I'm a chef" after you threw a Hearty Man dinner in the microwave. Is a chef at a five-star restaurant smarter or more talented than you? Probably not. But did he/she invest a hell of a lot of time and effort into learning how to do something a lot more complex than microwaving freezer food? You bet.

I like your dog just fine. And if you want to call it a fur-baby, whatever. But if you think that being the best "dog mom" in the world is on par with successfully raising a human child, you're straight up delusional.

Ditto for cats, horses, birds, ferrets, whatever the fuck.

Sorry for being so bitchy, but mothers are already undervalued enough in this country without everybody acting like what they do is anything but the hard-and frequently thankless-work it is.
