title: let out the beast
pairing(s): jongtae
rating: nc-17
wordcount: ~5700
summary: this (aka shapeshifting!shinee) continued….
a/n: part two, aka the part where they actually shack up. it's been a million years since the first part, i know.. sorry….

At first the fear is that Jonghyun will change in the van or on an elevator or in public, but then promotions roll around and the fear is that he will change on stage, because literally nothing could be worse than a giant, stinky wolf bursting forth from the confines of his flashy stage outfit on live television. )

jongtae, shinee

his very best Obey-The-Maknae face
this made me laugh because i'd bet a precious thing shit's real

But it's okay; he doesn't need them. Banana milk understands him. Banana milk will never leave him.
this taemin is already so great

(He also eats the remaining chips for good measure; best to destroy all evidence, right?)
perfect self-serving munchkin ;-; it's amusing how little it all phases him

"I guess so," Jonghyun sighs. "I can't believe this happened. My beautiful face. The fans will be devastated."

"I'm gorgeous again!" he exclaims, rushing into the other bedroom and clutching his face happily.
hahaha all these characters are perfect. the way they treat every situation so flippantly and only think of themselves

"Nothing wrong with blond hair," Jonghyun says.

Minho shoots him a death glare.

"But I see your point."

"I think I'm gonna sleep in your guys' room tonight," Jonghyun says.
:')

Taemin rolls his eyes. "It's an escaped zoo tiger that somehow managed to get into our dorm."
taem sassing the shit out of everything ♥

That he has the ability to make Jinki cry without even trying is a revelation that shoudn't be pleasing but is. It almost makes him want to cry.
ok this actually blew my mind a little bit. you have such a keen insight into taemin's thinking

So he's about to take two short steps forward and fucking do something about it when Minho honks the horn impatiently, the harsh sound startling Taemin back to reality.
taemin is so brazen ahhhhhh

and Minho has nearly killed them all while attempting to answer his phone (which turned out to be a butt dial from Jonghyun)
i really enjoy how even the narration of the story is kinda flippant, like them almost dying would've been a plot point in another story but here it's a throwaway detail

"So," Minho says once they've safely parked back at the dorm building's parking garage, "who's next, do you think? Taemin or Jinki?"

"Me," Taemin says, "and I'll be a cheetah."

"Jinki," Jonghyun says, "and he'll be something really stupid. Like a duck."

They relay this prediction to Jinki when they get upstairs, and are punished with an hour's worth of Donald Duck beatboxing.
i'm so in like with these characters ;~; because they're written to be over the top but they still reference shinee in a believable way, like i could totally picture jinki thinking he's being hilarious by doing that impression for longer than anyone cares to listen to it

But Jonghyun won't touch him anymore. That's what's weirdest about this, really, because Jonghyun's never not touched him.

Between the five of them, they've cobbled together an entire language of touch, in which Jonghyun has the largest vocabulary.

This sudden silence is very disconcerting.
this is my favourite part of the story, like it really hit me hard because once again, it's rooted in something real. such a great observation

"Hyung," Taemin whines as he bends to retrieve it, "what the hell, that is my phone."
like he hasn't cracked the screen of every single phone he's ever owned lmao

"Try thinking non-wolfy thoughts," Jinki says rather unhelpfully at the dinner table that night.
the way no one feels particularly phased by or even bad for jonghyun continues to be kind of completely great

A thought comes to him during the dry rehearsal: if this is what it takes to stay human, he should just stay deliriously tired all the time.
!!
the way you inject real life stuff into your stories gives them this edge, i have trouble expressing how much i like it

Jonghyun watches the two of them, watches the space between them compress with the promise of a kiss.
ugh god

The air tastes stronger now, of cloying stage makeup and harsh hair product.
the word choice here, it captures and conveys his change really succinctly

Jonghyun is probably an idiot, but this is a fucking epiphany to him. He has always wanted Taemin. Fragile, harebrained, invincible Taemin, who, by some miracle, wants him too. Neither of them have ever said it, and neither of them ever will unless something changes right now. No time like the present for making a complete ass of yourself, Jonghyun thinks.
the way jonghyun thinks of taemin is the prettiest thing about this chapter :)

"I - " Honestly, the thought never, ever occured to Jonghyun. Like, ever. "Sorry?"

"I guess it's not really any of my business," Minho continues, shoving his clothes into a duffel bag, "but, I don't know, hyung. You just - I don't know."

"Spit it out," Jonghyun says.

"I don't think you really know what you're doing," Minho says flatly. "I don't think you have any idea."

He says it all serious, and the stern scowl on his face should be comical. Jonghyun should be cracking up. Instead, he feels the fluttering in his chest grow worse, more frenzied, more frantic.

"Yeah," Jonghyun says. "It's really none of your business."
minho's character is so interesting to me in this story, because he leaves a lot of stuff unspoken. on the one hand he seems pretty bothered by all of his band members shacking up, but at the same time he's genuinely looking out for them. he's layered and it's awesome

I Know I Said I Only Wanted Your Body But I Changed My Mind Because You're Amazing In Every Way
jonghyun :')

He didn't ask for anyone's shitty advice. He's dealing with this in his own way, in his own time. Since when is his love life a group endeavour?
you went in wanting their advice though :'))) haha this jonghyun is too wonderful

i really enjoyed this! i liked how in the end it wasn't about them transforming at all, how nobody even gets particularly crushed over that but instead just wants to get on with things. the mood change between the first chapter and the second one might have been by chance but it really fit the story and taemin and jonghyun's individual points of view. your characters are really easy to love :D you have a new fan
