It had been a very busy weekend for Mary. From a business standpoint, Mary crossed yet another idea off her to-do list when the hotel hosted its first afternoon tea. Mary hoped to make it a regular Saturday event. On a more personal level, she got to
catch up with Stan over tea on Saturday and helped
a very drunk John Connor make it home from Caritas on Sunday. The Three Minute Dates? She hadn't exactly met her soul mate, but the
new people she had met were nice.
She was surprised to find common ground with Deadpool and with her history, it didn't hurt to know a mercenary for hire. And
then there was the matter of Johnny Storm.
She'd had a
wonderful evening with Johnny on Friday night. Mary was surprised at how strongly she felt about him, but having a relationship with a student didn't seem like the best idea. There was also the nagging thought that pursuing someone so young was not all that different from what her father had done to her, and the last thing Mary wanted was to have something in common with Frank Connell. Never mind the fact that Johhny had been the one doing all the pursuing so far and Mary had resisted his advances at first.
Mary wasn't even sure what Johnny wanted. He made it clear on Friday night that he didn't want to get married, and Mary was fine with that. Still, she would like to find someone open to the idea of a long-term relationship at least. She knew he was seeing other people and she had no problem with that, but he seemed to have a problem with the other men in her life. He was most definitely not soul mate material. Maybe she should end things before they got any more complicated.
She was just debating how to do that when her cell phone rang. "This is Mary Connell. How may I help you?"
"It's Delinda. Gunther told me that you're sleeping with my father. Is that true?"
"What?" asked Mary, shocked. "I can't believe you would even accuse me of that! You know me better than that, Delinda."
There was silence on the other end of the line for a moment before Delinda finally responded. "Mary, I'm so sorry. Danny told me that Gunther's story was nonsense but I didn't know what to think. Something weird is going on with my parents and I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix it. They were shopping together for a condo, but then Mom came home by herself and I haven't heard from Dad. I think she's really left him for good, but she won't tell me what happened. I thought that after he quit working for the Montecito that it would be the end of their fighting."
"Your father is in Virginia, Delinda," said Mary. "I just saw him last week. He's got a condo in Mclean and it looked like he's been working with some of his ex-CIA buddies." Mary couldn't help glancing at the mysterious briefcase that Ed gave her when they met last week. It was safely tucked away in the corner of her bedroom until she could figure out what to do with the contents.
"I really don't need this right now," said Delinda, and Mary could definitely hear some sniffling at the other end of the line. "No one told me that the morning sickness would last all day, and Danny hasn't been all that supportive."
"Delinda, sweetie, you did tell him that you were pregnant, right?" asked Mary, worried.
"No," said Delinda, completely succumbing to tears. "I want to know first that he's with me because he loves me, not because I'm his baby momma."
"He's going to catch on at some point, Delinda," pointed out Mary. "Listen, I know Danny better than anyone else. He'll totally be there for you. Just give him a chance."
"Okay," said Delinda, sniffling again. "So, you're in Virginia? That's what Mike said after he traced your last e-mail, but he couldn't pin down what city you were in."
"It's an island just off the coast," said Mary. "I'm running a hotel here. It's not Vegas, but it's a really nice place."
"I should come there and see you, now that I know Daddy's out there too," said Delinda. "It would be nice to see Gunther again. I wouldn't be where I am today if he hadn't given me that first job."
After saying good-bye, Mary wandered over to the little kitchenette in her suite. Maybe tonight was a good night for baking cookies. She was just rummaging through the fridge for ingredients when someone knocked on the door.
It was a very sheepish looking Gunther. "Delinda told me that I'm an idiot," he said apologetically.
"You're not an idiot, Gunther. I should have been more up front about what I was doing," said Mary. "I will definitely keep you in the loop next time."
"I miss Delinda," said Gunther before bursting into tears.
"Aw, Gunther," said Mary, reaching over to give him a big hug. "And
hands above the waist this time," she warned him. "Otherwise,
I have a friend who might torch you if you grope my ass again."
