I once gave a splendid dinner in Rome. Among the guests was the Montebello, noted for his exquisite breeding. At one point during the banquet, the Monte rose and gazed around at a priceless collection of carpets, mirrors, bronzes, wall tapestries, gold and crystal. He shrugged his shoulders before glancing at the regiment of liveried servants lined against the walls. Finally he approached one of the lackeys and spat into his mouth. I was understandably shocked, gazed dumbfounded at my guest. "My lord," Montebello explained, "it was the only place I could find in the whole room where I could spit."

The two writers you should study in depth now are: (1) Vladimir Nabokov
[whom you mention]; and (2) W.G. Sebald. Nabokov: Lolita; Pale Fire;
Pnin; Mary; Nabokov's Quartet [Four Stories]; Speak, Memory [a wonderful
memoir]; Ada. Then his translation of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin [4 vols
with commentary publ by the Bollington Series, Princeton. As for Sebald:
(1) The Rings of Saturn; (2) Vertigo; (3) Austerlitz; (4) The Emigrants.
No bios yet, as he was only killed two years ago, at age 58, in a car
accident in East Anglia.
Thanks for the update on your activities. I am leavning tomorrow monring
to visit my son in Tucson. Back on Tuesday.
Best Wishes

Coach,

Stop writing in Amy's journal. And forget biographies -- they're filled with lies anyhow. Also, tell Amy about Kosinsky. You've read him.

I have not read him. I'm going to see my son now, goodbye.
