Loving a show called 'Life'

Depending upon my mood and what looking interesting as far as new TV series is concerned, I either explore or ignore what the TV networks offer.  I tend to avoid hype because sometimes it can lead to disapppointment.  I also don't like watching series premieres or pilots as they're usually slower than their subsequent episodes and can be on the boring side.

I also tend to be a bit picky about what I watch.  I don't dislike all the shows that don't grab me, because I do often see the potential and understand why people enjoy the shows.  So there's many that don't appeal to me that I still rate as good shows. :)

Comedies like "How I Met Your Mother" are great, but I don't set aside the time to watch them.  I really have no reason why.  'The Office' is another show I don't watch enough. :)

Dramas are iffy with me.  If they involve a lot of tension and arguments or sappy plots, I change channels.  I'm not one for soaps, though I have watched a few in my lifetime.

Mysteries and police dramas are always a favorite of mine, though I can't quite join the CSI fanclub.  I watched the first season of the original CSI and found myself shouting at the TV.  So I moved on. :)

'Law & Order', 'Without a Trace' and 'Cold Case' are always good.  I also like 'Saving Grace'.  It's better than I thought it would be with plenty of strong characters, but again it's not something I drop everything for.  Perhaps in time I will watch more often. :)  It's growing on me. :)  Sadly, Bones didn't capture my attention.  NCIS is okay.

Scifi is also iffy with me.  Some Scifi is great, but others just don't hold my interest.  I have friends who love 'Eureka' and 'Battlestar Galactica'.  I loved the 3-hour pilot of "Battlestar Galactica', and even enjoyed the first few episodes.  However, I soon grew tired of Baltar talking to himself (I know he was talking to the Cylon, but only the viewers knew that).  This dragged for a few episodes before I had enough, plus the plots dragged a bit as well.  So, sadly, I passed on 'Battlestar', though I thought Richard Hatch's first appearance on the show was very good.

I used to watch 'Lost' but got...er...lost.  Actually, it was my patience that was lost.  I didn't mind the mystery, but it kept changing, as if the writers didn't think through the entire story.

When it comes to scifi, I prefer paranormal/psyche based plots over space alien ones.  I liked the first season of "Ghost Whisperer" (but hated her hair.  LOL!), but sadly felt the show was straying into the "we're all doomed" direction that X-Files did years ago.  Once we head down that road, I wander back home and go somewhere else. LOL! :)

And "reality".... What?  No, I don't normally watch "reality" shows.  I did watch 'Dancing with the Stars' the first two years, but I find the format tedious.  The rehearsal scenes have become repetitive with us seeing the celebs struggling with the routines.  I understand it's difficult and there is a steep learning curve, but the way those segments are shown it almost feels staged.  I switch it on once in a while, but only to watch the dancing.  I do like Tom Bergeron.  He's a good host in general.  I loved him on Hollywood Squares. :)

Anyway, last fall I decided to give a lot of shows a chance, mainly because the year before I was in England on a 3 month assignment and missed out on a lot of new series, except for 'Journeyman', which I felt was a bit weak in it's rehashing of an old theme.

So in late 2008, long after the writers strike had ended and shows were returning, I gave a few a chance.  I liked 'Pushing Daisies' for a while, but soon lost interest.  I loved the quirkiness, but found it to be a bit too stretched, and a few episodes seemed to lack the spark that others had.  In the end it was cancelled.

I gave 'Private Practice' two chances.  The first episode I saw was really good.  The second one not as much.  I soon lost interest.  I never quite got into Grey's Anatomy, so this one followed the same path as that one.

I really wanted to like 'Samantha Who?' but was disappointed.  I know she has amnesia, but her sometimes ditzy airheadedness really got to me.  Was that a result of the amnesia as well or was she always like that?

I had heard how great 'Brothers and Sisers' was, but sadly there was too much tension for my taste.  I turned the channel after watching 30 minutes of family disagreements and arguments.  I didn't feel like sitting through another 30 minutes of it.

One day I decided to find out what 'Life' was about (pun partially intended), and I was hooked immediately.  I loved the quirky, Zen-like Crews, and his down-to-earth, recovering addict Reese.  Their boss had a bit too much grease in his hair early this season, but that's long gone.  I like him too.  And I love Adam Arkin's character as well. :)

I'm a bit lost with the subplot, but that doesn't bother me too much.  I know I'll catch up eventually once I have seen all the season 1 episodes. :)

And despite the fact that last night's episode rested heavily on the subplot, I still enjoyed it and found it fantastic.  I loved the ending, though it had a familiarity to it.  I could have sworn I had seen that scene before, though I don't think this was a repeat.  Still, I loved it.

So 'Life' wins, which is a good thing, afterall. ;)

And for the record, here's a list of currently airing/filming shows I do watch (in no particular order):

US series:
1.  Life
2.  Mythbusters
3.  Cold Case (when it's not delayed due to football or basketball games)
4.  Without a Trace

UK series:
1. Midsomer Murders
2. Primeval
3. Saturday Night Takeaway.
4. Masterpiece (okay it's a US title, but the programs are all from the UK)
5. Mystery (same as above)

But you can't fault me for being unique.  I also love tons of old shows going way back to the early 1970's (and before then as well) through the 90's. :)

Do I have odd taste?  Perhaps. :)
