recently the bbc's website has contained a lot of coverage related to the twentieth anniversary of the chernobyl diaster. there are some incredibly moving, aesthetically pleasing, downright spooky pictures from inside the abandoned zone surrounding the reactor. there is a part of my brain that is supremely pleased at these images of a land without people, post-apocalyptic, the wildnerness & animals taking over and thriving.
as a small child i deeply empathized with animals and with the outdoors. environmentalism sparked my budding political consciousness as a preteen. this coupled with recurring depression & a misanthropic streak leads me to fantasize about the human race dying out and the vestiges of civilization being taken over by weeds, trees, creatures.
but i don't know, maybe the world is still worth saving. and the enormous human suffering, that can't be forgotten.
it's strange there are constantly these momentous life-altering events happening, big and small, but then looking back they seem unimaginable and the consequences are on the way to being ignored. i'm rambling, i need to sleep.
