The first episode of season four did not please me.

Behind the cut to avoid squee harshing.

I was not bothered by the introduction of an angel. I will think of Dogma a lot. :)

But what I feared came to pass: the misogyny that worsened in season three is still fouling things up.

The episode began with a "the story until now" clip round up which seemed to feature every single half-naked woman who dies a bloody death during the first three seasons.

On the plus side, there was the happy (and well-acted) moment of Dean and Sam reuniting. But then the writers wrecked it by making a big point of having Sam's (apparent) hook-up get rudely dumped. There was no plot or character reason for the rudeness, and it felt like a creepy nod to SPN fans who go ballistic about any young woman on the show who could possibly be a Sam or Dean love interest.

Regarding speculation as to whether the girl was at that time possessed by Ruby, and whether her undressed state implied she and Sam have sex: I think that's giving the producers and writers too much credit. I don't think there was any mysterious plottiness intended. My take on it: the girl was already possessed by Ruby when Dean arrived, and she and Sam were not having sex. Her lack of clothing and lack of reaction at seeing Dean were the result of gratuitous nudity and bad acting.

But worse was coming. Dean slaps a woman hard, twice, and then disdainfully throws money at her. I don't care that she was possessed by a demon (see eso's misogyny bingo for the "it doesn't count if they are...bad women" excuse). The scene sickened me.

I will not comment on the fate of the female psychic who made a pass at the brothers.

Unfortunately for me, the SPN producers' and writers' pandering to young males (or whoever the heck they think likes this stuff ) is killing my enjoyment of the show. I was completing a 30,000 word fic when season three harshed my squee badly, and I couldn't finish the fic; the Sam and Dean I had been writing about didn't seem to exist any more.

I hope season four doesn't keep wallowing in women bashing, and I hope my flist warns me when an episode might be unwatchable for me (some warned for Malleus Maleficarum, for instance), so I can continue following the show.

I do not have much hope, however, because, when I picked up an issue of the new SPN comic, it had John hitting women, killing women, and calling them bitches. I'm afraid the SPN producers have wholly embraced the disgusting horror cliche of bashing/dicing/slicing women.

From trollprincess:

Season one -- Dean or Sam refer to a woman by a pejorative three times in twenty-two episodes.
Season two -- Dean or Sam refer to a woman by a pejorative three times in twenty-two episodes.
Season three -- Dean or Sam refer to a woman by a pejorative eighteen times in sixteen episodes.
