Last thoughts before graduation tomorrow

May 24, 2007 19:44

Person 1: I shouldn't do this, but I pulled you out for a moment to give you a hint.
Person 2: A hint?
Person 1: Take wrong turns. Talk to strangers. Open unmarked doors. And if you see a group of people in a field, go find out what they're doing. Do things without always knowing how they'll turn out.
Person 2: Why tell me this?
Person 1: You're curious and smart and bored, and all you see is the choice between working hard and slacking off. There are so many adventures that you miss because you're waiting to think of a plan. To find them, look for interesting choices, and remember that you are always making up the future as you go.

-- xkcd. (The ending of this particular comic is rather bizarre)

I wish I had seen this before I wrote my graduation speech, because I think this dialogue is quite noble for the online comic strip. If there were anything I'd like to improve about myself before college, it would be to take more wrong turns, talk to more strangers, be more spontaneous and adventurous in general, to get over the stupid black/white choices and just relax. But at the same time, I don't mind how I've turned out after high school. Sure, I wish I were thinner and less cynnical, but I think I'll be ok these next 4 years. Whee!

All I have to do is get through tomorrow. Public speaking... ahhh!
