and 1 year later...

Today is the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, however most New Orleans residents' stories about their experiences begin a few days before. Mine started exactly with the events in this entry. I had been studying for my Virginia Woolf test that Thursday night, when I remembered that Mark would be leaving for Columbia the next day, so, eager ( Read more... )

This is a really well written post.

I'm amazed at how much people have already forgotten about Hurricane Katrina. I'm also amazed at the fact so many people wanted it out of the news so quickly, or that they complained it was overdone. I mean, is the world so messed up that people can't show an ounce of compassion? Possibly, probably, although I wouldn't like to believe that.

I was taken by surprised a few months ago when I was doing my UChicago on-campus interview and the person asked me, "Whose fault is Hurricane Katrina?" At the time, I answered the government: local, federal, and state. I've been starting to realize it is not only the government's fault, but also the general American public for believing the media about New Orleans, or just turning their backs and not caring. For wanting it out of the news, for wanting to go back with their daily lives, for wanting the disaster victims to be out of their towns, for just wanting to be consumed with their own problems...

On another note, I was surprised when the mayor won the primaries. What are you opinions of him?

They asked that during the interview? Yikes! I dont' know how I'd respond about that to a college interviewer; I obviously can't print out this entry and show it to them. Must go brush up on current events! Most of the country really doesn't seem to care that much; however, around the world (especially India) people are wondering why the richest country in the world is letting its own citizens rot. It doesn't send out a good image at all.

I think our mayor put his foot in his mouth many times, but his heart is in the right place. I was surprised that he won though.

I think that question is definately a UChicago or MIT kind. Supposedly, the questions are incredibly random. They also asked me about tennis at UChicago, and luckily I used to play tennis. Also, I prepared for this interview by reading list of most common questions...I was only asked one: "How would your friends describe you?"

Hmm...I should probably take a look at that list. And brush up on tennis, haha (My family is full of tennis champs. I'm the only one who's an absolute spaz)
