I've only been here for a few months and already I've seen the school's population suffer hallucinations, be turned into animals, and be tricked into thinking they were poisoned. Never a dull moment around here, huh? I think I'm going to stick to cooking my own meals for just a little while.

Miller paused as soon as he noticed the door ajar. What was with people breaking into his room lately? It was understandable when he had the antidotes, but now... what could someone possibly want? Had CIPHER found him in the year 2010...?

What's worse, his gun was in his room. He resorted to adopting a CQC-ready stance before sneaking inside, careful not to disturb the door.

If only he had a box with him.

The room was eerily quiet. It was so dark that the entire room wasn't immediately visible. The window was open too.

...And then Miller took his shades off.

By the far wall, a tall metal construct sprung to life. Red and blue lights on its shoulders and a blue eye visor lit up. Its hands raised. There were clearly weapons mounted in them.

An obviously altered voice could be heard from a speaker on the robot. "Mr. Miller," he said. "I have need of your services."

What the hell was that?! A miniature Metal Gear!? This one had arms... He still didn't know the true extent of the capabilities of today's robots, but he had a hunch he wouldn't be able to take it out on his own.

And then it spoke. Or... Someone was speaking through it, anyway. Miller kept on his guard.

"Who sent you? I'd rather speak with a potential employer directly."

"Forgive the intrusion, however at the moment I'm not certain who exactly I can trust," the voice of the potential employer answered. "Though as a token of good faith, I will tell you my name. I am Julian Kintobor, CEO of Meteor Tech Security. And I have a job for you, should you hear me out."

Ha. And how was he supposed to trust someone who just broke into his home? Still, the prospect of a job this early on was kind of exciting. The only problem was whether or not his current soldiers were qualified or not.

"I can't guarantee I'll be able to take it, but... Let me hear it." He turned the light on, closed the door, and put his shades back on.

"Excellent." The robot tromped into the light.

"As you may or may not be aware, Meteor Tech holds a number of very lucrative and top secret government defense contracts. We design a number of machines for both war and peace. Now naturally, we have competitors. And in the world of high profile government contracts, competition rarely stays friendly."

"A top secret piece of equipment that we developed has been stolen by one of our... more overzealous competitors, hoping it will give them an edge. I want you to get it back for me."

"MACHINES FOR PEACE DON'T WORK. :'|"

"And what would the payment for a successful operation be?"

"I am prepared to offer you $100,000 for a successful mission," he announced. "As I would like this matter to be handled discretely, if you can manage that then I will double that figure."

Hot damn.

"I'll need more information - the name of this competitor, where you expect they might be keeping this stolen technology, anything you know about their security... I think I'll be able to work something else.

"Payment in advance would be great, too."

"Now now, Mr. Miller, I didn't get to where I am that way," the voice reminded him. "I will give you $25,000 advance, and the rest once you've succeeded."

The robot produced a manilla folder. "This file contains all of the information you need to know. The location of their facility, and any technical readouts I've been able to obtain. You will need to improvise, as their security is very tight."

"Be careful with these goods," he warned. "The stolen item is an experimental energy source. In its current form it is very unstable. They don't realize how dangerous it is. One wrong move, and there could be a potential disaster on our hands." The robot extended its hand. In it was a metal cylinder. "Use this to transport it. This container will dampen its energies and make it safe to move."

"Fair enough." That was still a good amount of money to start with.

He accepted the envelope, gauging its weight in his hand. It was going to be a late night of reading, that was for sure. He placed it on his desk before taking the metal container. This was sounding more and more like dealing with nuclear warheads by the minute. Too bad a certain expert wasn't in this time period.

"How should I get in contact once the job's done?"

"Press the button on the side of the canister," he explained. "That will signal me."

"Just one more thing. Don't fail me."

With that, the robot turned and leaped out the open window, firing rockets and flying off into the distance.
