It is very rare that I try to forge friendships at work. Especially working security, where actions and consequences can compromise said friendship and ruin them. As such, I tend to keep a stoic demeanor and professional distance. Today though was different. Someone who I have worked with for a few years has recently had me opening up a bit more than I normally do. This morning as I was walking them to their car, I did something rare and unusual (for me), I initiated physical contact. Just a brief, one-arm hug, but for me that is a great threshold to cross. After that, I let them know how I was feeling. The detachment of my wife being in another city, not having reasons to go out. From this, came the first seeds of a new friendship. Now I will have to carefully cultivate it, this is new territory I am in, but I am going to face it with courage, honor and fearless reasoning. To the person I was with this morning when this all happened, I thank you. I hope what has developed professionally over the years helps the bonds of friendship for years to come.
