This leaves me with a sort of heavy feeling that it's hard to comment through.
Beautiful writing though, every sentence adds a bit more to clarify the feeling and then the end... ;_; It also strikes me as a natural little detail, one song you associate with something so strongly, even when it remains just out of reach... And I hate that feeling that you've corrupted an incomplete memory by trying to recreate it because you just know you've overwritten what you had with something you made up. >_<
"The song was how he had been sure that the extreme, irresponsible degree of happiness had been mutual." And this makes me smile even though it should hurt, that feeling of 'OMG WE BOTH REALLY LIKE EACH OTHER' has got to be one of the happiest things ever.
"Hard to remember that he had lost nothing that had actually existed." ........PAULIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE! I think what gets me the most is not that it happened, but that resigned sense of Paulie trying to convince himself it doesn't hurt because it was all fake anyway. Like

I want to apologize for being so mean to Paulie, but I'm just working off canon. ;_;
It is fantastic to hear that this worked for you. I really tried to keep it to small, honest details and always worry I don't tell what I need to. Thank you!!!
