What the fuck. Seriously. Just, what? What was that? I don't know what I just watched.
This is a good reaction, by the way.
I don't even know. I want to say it's a classic. I don't know if that'd be overreaching or not. Fuck it. It's a classic.
Just ... goddamn. The effects. THE EFFECTS! Amazing. The mecha suit in this movie makes me believe that an anime movie could actually work if it were handled by the right people. There was a seriously otherworldly quality to the way it moved.
I actually liked the aliens. Normally I roll my eyes at the "good" aliens, but I could take them here. Maybe because they were still violent and angry creatures. Which they had the right to be. That made it easier to handle.
The gore was gory, as expected. Well, not really as expected. I didn't expect to see humans virtually vaporised. But the weapon designs and the deaths looked realistic, and again, otherworldly.
Wikus. Oh, Wikus. You've got my heart in your hands right now and there's a great big gaping hole in my chest. GODDAMNIT, I WANTED A HAPPY ENDING FOR YOU. You know, I think I could've handled it a bit better if they left the ending right when they said "this is the last footage we have of him". I could've dealt with that. BUT NO, then they had to go and show Wikus before it all happened, talking to the camera about how his wife is an angel and how much he loves her, and fuck, the tears started all over again. FUCK YOU, MAN, FUCK YOU. And then him, at the end, fully transformed, still waiting around for a cure and making metal flowers for his wife. FUCKING HELL. brb, crying.
(Surprisingly, I actually liked the fact that he was a bit of a douche at the beginning of the film. You kind of forget for a moment that this is your main character, you're supposed to like him, because he really is a bit dickish. Temporarily srs bsns, but I think he was taken in by the media propaganda, and the influence of the MNU; that's why he seemed so content doing his job. He thought he was doing the right thing. So the fact that he becomes one of the things he was oppressing, you could kind of find that ironically amusing. I don't think I can. It's heartbreaking. The things he went through ... no one deserves that.)
I was squirming through the torture/capture sequences. Really not pleasant. THE LOOK ON WIKUS'S FACE. HIS FACE. HE LOOKED SO CONFUSED AND TERRIFIED. Poor boy. THEY WERE GOING TO CUT HIM OPEN. WTF, Y'ALL.
The filming style, partly documentary style and partly narrative? Worked really well for this movie. I'll admit, the first time it switched from doco to normal movie tricked me a bit, because I wasn't sure where in the timeline we were. But you get used to it quickly. I can't really imagine this movie any other way than what it is. I'm not sure how it would have worked.
I feel like I've just seen something utterly mind blowing. I loved the story. I loved the effects. I loved the style. I loved Wikus.
GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE. IT NEEDS TO GET THE RECOGNITION IT SO DESERVES. IT'S COOL IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT - I'M SURE A LOT OF PEOPLE WON'T. BUT JUST SEE IT. GIVE SOMETHING NEW A CHANCE.
... I THINK I NEED A LIE DOWN. AND TO GO AND SEE IT AGAIN. THE ONLY THING I CAN REALLY THINK OF RIGHT NOW IS EXPLOSIONS AND HEARTBREAK.
Just stunning. Absolutely stunning.
