I've recently conversed with a divine lady who's spoken to someone who claims responsibility for bringing us here.According to the scrolls from Kusagakure, Izanagi is the god of the sky and all things good and right. He is also a prominent part of this world's creation myth ( Read more... )

Izanagi?

I don't know. This whole thing seems a little grade-school for one of the big shots.

Do try to keep in mind that being any given god and saying that you are that god are two very different things. If I had a yen for every time I fooled some mortal into thinking I was a goddess of something or another, I would... probably be able to buy lunch at a reasonably priced establishment.

You're right, of course. I've met someone who falsely claimed to be Kami-sama as well. However, it's new information and at least someone, somewhere has offered an explanation for us being here, nonsensical or not.

Oh, it's certainly interesting. Whether it's real or not, that someone is claiming to be Izanagi tells us something.

Not really sure what, yet, but it's bound to be something fun.

Fun. That's precisely the word I'd use to describe it.

Isn't this all terribly exciting, Hakkai? We were all kidnapped and brought to this quaint quiet nowhere and for all intents and purposes were expected to sit around farming and living together in harmony. We weren't even given a medium in which to complain if we weren't happy with the situation.

And now we're going to take the gods' shitty plan for us and fuck it up! It's going to be beautiful. We're going to smash this cage to bits.

They would have to be very stupid gods, to expect that we would have any intention of sitting around farming.

I would also make the observation that the gods obviously do not favour Konoha. You seem vastly outmatched to me.

That means the gods support my actions.

I certainly hope not. If they're happy with us they'll just keep us here forever.

Perhaps their intention was to put us here to battle to the death for proof that we have the right to return to our own lifestyles. If it is a test, the obstacle should be to destroy our enemies. Otherwise, it makes no sense to put two opposing sides in one area. The gods could have just as easily placed only Akatsuki here. In which case there would have peace. However, having put Akatsuki and Konoha here, the conclusion is obvious.

Aha, well. Sometimes it's hard to judge how humans will react in a situation. They may have missed the mark a bit and figured that you would all kiss and make up or something.

Or perhaps they just didn't notice that you were fighting. Humans fight a lot, after all.

If what this man says about these devices getting us to better relate to one another is true, then you and I are doing that, as we're united in . . . I'm not sure what, but you understand my meaning.

This means we are utilizing the potential of this world, I would say.

Your theory disregards the presence of Yukari-san and myself, as well as the others not from this world - of which there are at least three more.

I have to tend to agree with Yukari-san - I doubt the gods knew you were fighting, or cared. The way the Hitomi device expands our world and forces us to walk in others shoes seems like a technique to get us to better relate to one another.

But if you want to believe they support you in this, by all means, please do! Hyperbole is always a wonderful idea and Gods definitely support bullies.

To better relate to one another, or to better know one another's weaknesses for the upcoming war.

Or to break down barriers in understanding between us that would have us hold onto grudges.

There's a reason Konan-san questioned your decision to go to war. It's difficult not to feel compassion for someone once you've felt what it's like to be them.

But you're not troubled by such difficulties, are you, Pain-san?

Whether I feel compassion for others or not is irrelevant. Compassion has always existed, but so too have wars.

You may not feel compassion, Nagato. You may choose not to. But others may feel it.

I am making this private because I know you don't want these discussions aired in public.

But Hakkai-san is actually right. About me. The reason I wanted to speak to Konoha directly is because these devices caused me to feel compassion for them.

It's possible that they could also be used as spying tools to root out weaknesses, as you suggest. But... that isn't how I reacted.

It's not how you reacted either. Initially.

[She thinks for a long moment before continuing.]

My own compassion put me in a situation that I found... [a trace of apprehension crosses her face]... overwhelming. Impossible. In the end, I was glad of the closure you were able to provide.

What you do, what you have said we'll do, is a solution. I know you feel better when we take decisive action against our enemies. In truth.. so do I. But I feel ashamed of it. Hakkai is not wrong. And he showed my own hypocrisy to me ( ... )

I could not care less what this man thinks, and I feel no compassion for the enemy.

What you feel, on the other hand, is on your own conscience.
