Good god DeVotchka! puts on a great show. Their recorded stuff isn't nearly as good as when they play it live. The lead singer has two mikes, one that's standard fare while the other has a crazy reverb effect. It makes his voice sound reaaallly good, although I'm sure it's pretty good acoustic as well. Their instrumentation is kick ass. Violin always makes things interesting, but my favorite combo (they're all multi-instrumentalists) was accordion, guitar, tuba, and drums. The tuba (ok fine, it was a sousaphone) makes a great substitute for normal base, plus it's so wonderfully quirky. All in all they're great musicians, and played great together. Geezus it was soooo goood. The opening act blew ass. My Brightest Diamond? Yeah. Their music sucks. Their lead singer has this fluty voice that is pretty cool for about 5 minutes. Their drummer and bassist were alright players, but good god that band needs to learn to write music. They didn't have any progression, just the same rift over and over again, with vocals and lyrics that could best be described as "droning" and "unenunciated". They actually had the nerve to do a "punk-esque" song with the lead singer squeaking out "freak out", in an effort to make people "dance". Nobody danced. I winced. They suck, and I'm very bitter about having to stand through their set just to hear DeVotchka! play. Ugh.
No get stuff from NU trip. I hear it snowed there. A lot.
