there's a hole in the screen outside my window. it seems to be a favored hunting ground for lizards since bugs are attracted by the light inside. sometimes small bugs get through the hole. i watched a gecko stalk a trapped lightning bug until it was scared away by a cicada. it made my thoughts wander. brief musings on what it means to be intelligent. what a slow, simple, and beautifully entertaining thing it was to watch. wondering if the lightning bug was even aware of the danger outside the screen. eventually to current affairs and the state of... well, everything human. i wanted to say humanity but the implies a certain something that there never seems to be enough of. would you consider yourself a gecko, a lightning bug, or a cicada?
