been noticing a disturbing... well, the best word i have now is trend. if i had more friends on LJ i'd ask for a poll but as it stands i'll just use it as a sounding board. *ahem* i use a debit card (that's a trend too) and my bank offers up-to-the-minute internet access of my account. some days, especially on those frivolous days when a little $$ spent here, a little there and some over yonder, there are several "memo" posts to the account. many of them posted twice. i've spoken with a bank teller and was told that some business "double debit" your account, mostly gas stations. lately other businesses have adopted this same practice. it hasn't caused problems with me but someone i spoke with said that they have been overdrafted several times because of this practice, each time with a fee, and each time the bank has expressed concern but basic apathy to their plight. it's legal.
so we ponder, who benefits from this? the bank of course. that's the first thing to come to mind.
and then it's suggested that if a business like Wal-Mart were to adopt this practice, and who knows how many people use debit cards at a Wal-Mart during one day, what would happen. hypothetical account with a high interest, place the dopple-ganger funds into this account for just a day, just one days' interest alone must be in the hundred thousands. there's Billary's next campaign fund right there.
and this may be blown out of proportion of course but it bothers me that after two days of 'net searching i still can't find anything about the double debits. still looking, trying to think of different search strings.
if this disappears after the presidential election i will be very miffed.
