In Latin America, Benedict XVI came under fire from the theologian Leonardo Boff, the Brazilian champion of liberation theology that the new Pope, as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, did much to crush. Fr Boff denounced him as "a hard man with no compassion" and predicted that his papacy would be marked by a "radical continuation" of John Paul II's ban on the use of condoms, and "discrimination" against homosexuals.
The Swiss-born theologian Hans Kueng - who knew the Pope during his more liberal days as a professor at the University in Tuebingen in the 1960s - said: "The election of Cardinal Ratzinger as Pope is an enormous disappointment for all those who hoped for a reformist and pastoral pope."
