Today holds visits to both of Minnesota's senators offices in order to convince them that the farm bill subsidies of corn, rice, wheat, soybeans, and cotton need to be discontinued. I'm more than a bit nervous about this, as I had not been as active in the campaign as I had planned. I have no idea what to even say to these senators. "Hi. I don't think subsidies are a good way to spend money or help farmers." There's no why statement I can come up with. Maybe I'll have to re-read all the literature I so diligently handed out back in June. I know there's something about decreasing the value of cotton and making farmers in Africa even poorer. I also remember something about mega-farms getting all the subsidies and small farmers getting none. Then there's re-distribution of money, perhaps to nutrition programs and rural development (internet access, information infrastructure, small business loans). Then there's always the food stamp program, which for some reason is part of the farm bill.
