i definitely thought HBP was the best book in the series yet. i really think that jkr has really embodied her novels and her characters, and i think this shows in the flow of the book. the book seems to flow so much better. she tells the plot and manages to interject some humour that doesn't appear to be inserted just for the humour; she really adds it in as a part of the story.
the best part about this book is that it makes the reader realize just how much the kids have grown up. the books REALLY grow with the reader and the characters. somehow, jkr has managed to keep the characters changing, growing, and learning. the ending was unfortunate, but there's always the hope that it's not what it seems. but, yes, this book answers so many questions but somehow manages to ask more. it DEFINITELY leaves the reader wanting the last book to answer so many of the questions that arise.
all in all, i give the book a 5/5. i think there's a reason the ending is how it is...perhaps to really symbolize the changing times and the characters' viewpoint of these times. before, the characters saw everything through a child's eyes. the danger involved before was "adventurous," but it's now terrifying, and i think that's due to the fact that the characters have matured and are responding accordingly to dangers and threats around them.
You're review sounds so much more planned out than mine...of course I was half sleep but still. You made points I discussed with my sister the other day. The only thing that annoyed me was it always seems like Harry's friends/mentors don't believe him. He's been right so far so come on! And yes it was necessary for that person to meet their unfortunate end because Harry couldn't grow as the hero if he always had someone protecting him but it doesn't make it any less disappointing. I hope the series will go out with a bang and that movie 4 will be good! PEACE OUT! :-D

i promise i didn't plan it out; i just tried to remember the sort of things my mom and i talked about. i agree with the annoyance at everyone's disbelief, but, on the other hand, it kind of shows everyone's blind reluctance to believe that voldemort's back and he's doing these things and controlling these people. they completely ignore harry when he's telling them the truth point blank. i do get REALLY frustrated when people don't believe him, though. he's almost always right!
