Let me make this perfectly clear. I live in an 800 square foot, two bedroom house. I have a husband and two children that share it with me, not to mention a small library's collection of books, half of a Toys R' Us, a wiley cat and enough culinary equipment to make Williams Sonoma blush.
My mom and dad were planning to come up from Florida for the weekend and stay with us because the daughter of an old family friend is getting married tomorrow. We figured we could squeeze them in - give them the children's bedroom, put the kiddos to sleep in our bed, maybe one of us take the couch...it would be snug, but for two days, who really cares? Then, with all the "gas crisis" madness, my mom got all freaked out and was afraid she wouldn't be able to make it up here without getting stranded on the side of I-75. As of Monday they called to cancel and last night when I talked to my mom she still didn't want to risk it.
Then my friend Liz, my children's unofficial 'Aunt Liz," texta me and says she's doing an internship in North Georgia for her media specialist degree and she'd love to come by our new house. I was like "Awesome! Do you want to spend the night?" The Junior League's massive annual thrift sale is tomorrow tomorrow morning, so when I threw that in to sweeten the deal, she was like "Sure!"
Liz is great and I know she wouldn't really care about the mess in my house so we didn't really attempt to clean the Haz-mat disaster I am living in. I didn't think anything of it because my parents weren't coming...riiight?
Wrong.
I just talked to my mom who announces "Your dad and I have the car packed...we are about to leave for Georgia..."
WHAT MOM?? Really?? Oh Crap! Suddenly, I feel this weekend may be quite the adventure. We'll be packed in like refugees!
I have called my husband twice to hide all the clean but unfolded laundry back in the dryer and maybe take a broom to...the whole damn house...but he isn't answering!!
I'm just glad I already bought the ingredients to make a hashbrown casserole and some homemade cheese danish. My guests will be cramped...but not hungry!
On a completely different note, I was supposed to leave work at 3:00 but I am still waiting for UPS to deliver a DVD I ordered for a professor - and promissed to personally place in her box so she could use it in class on Monday. I have been here all day, have left my desk maybe 10 minutes total for bio breaks, but the tracking info says they tried to deliver the package at 2:29 and the recepient was "On a holiday" WTF??? I think not - I wish I was on holiday! I called the 1-800 number and they say they will redeliver this afternoon, but that means I can't go home yet, dammit!!
Like a coworker said, "They never screw it up unless you really need it for somethnig important."
Well, I guess if the biggest stressers in my life right now are having too many loved ones in my little house and the location of a wayward breastfeeding DVD for the school of nursing, I am, in fact, a lucky girl.
