LJ Idol - Topic 16 - Equality

There’s this book in the teen section of our public library. The cover has a little warning label that says the material is intended for “Older Teens.” It’s about biker babes who catch criminals on the side while wearing leather Daisy Dukes and shredded, metal-studded halters over their heaving double D’s.

I wish my library had a graphic novel section.

Censorship is ugly and it’s even uglier when practiced by librarians, the very people who are entrusted with disseminating information to the masses.

I couldn't agree with you more!

I was in library school when Hall County went through that huge controversy over Heather and her daddies. We studied it in class while it was happening, courtesy of the newspaper clips Mom kept sending me.

I worked at a public library over the past four summers, and I'm so happy that there are librarians like you making decisions. I've seen so many parents approach the information desk with complaints about certain things being in the library. Most of the time, the librarians dismiss them with a helpless "Oh, I completely agree, but we're part of a county-wide system and you'll have to appeal to the higher authorities."

Thank goodness they don't have the power to censor what comes in. I hope the people higher up aren't swayed by such complaints.
