Life is made up of thousands of choices. Some are easy and some are hard, that is very evident. Making the choice to send the dog to the shelter was a hard one.
You did what your family could not, apparently. They couldn't use sounds judgment and reasoning to see the inherent difficulties that the addition of Cody would have caused. Further, none of them cared for the dog as much as he needed. That would have only died down even more as they got past the "new dog smell" and kept moving with their lives. It is easy to loose sight of what is important, and it is easy to be caught up in excitement. Finding Cody a home more suited to cater to his needs is better for everyone involved. I think your brother knows that but is just revisiting the loss of Max.
It's not the easy choices that make us who we are. The difficult ones forge us.
Integrity and honor are difficult to obtain and easy to loose. Do what is right and everything seems to work out though, so, let your heart be still and your sorrow brief. You did what was right when no one else could.
I'm proud of you.
