I've been performing to a bunch of non traditional poetry audiences recently and it's been qutie refreshing. It's fun performing in front of familiar faces but also in front of people who afterwards reiterate the old pharase "that's not what I expected" or "I didn't know that was poetry" and they liked is, I think is great.
Great for me to see if I can connect with these audiences. And it definitely seems I can.
One of the events was a 40th birthday party of an acquaintance of mine. A mutual friend hired me to the the surprise guest. The birthday girl is a big fan so I knew that she'd have a good time and I think her energy helped make people pay attention to start with but midst all the party chaos I managed to hold their attention, win some new fans and get a few people who were adamant they weren't going to enjoy poetry to do so. Nice. It was a really good time.
And over the weekend I did a show at the Seymour Art Gallery in Deep Cove, North Van, BC. Myself and half a dozen other poets were asked to write some new work in response to the new art exhibit. The theme of the exhibit is "Earth." It was a Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the place was packed. Maybe 60-70 people at the stat. We were all wondering where they cam from. They were mostly gallery members along with some folks from Deep Cove who were wandering by. The Gallery is on the main street of this tiny town.
The whole thing went over well and there was a lovely reaction from the crowd when I was done. Several folks had the urge to come and speak with me after the reading.
Afterwards we went to the legendary Raven Pub, the one Spiri of the West sings about.
I wrote two pieces for the show. A flity haiku
I want to be your
kinky compost so you can
biodegrade me
and this peice as well which I think I'm calling "Dead Horse Mascara"
The sun rise often brings me birdsong
But this morning all I hear
Is the insatiable blubber suck of
A vampire empire addicted to tar sands
An oily Nosferatu
Burbling and gurgling
Gurgling and burbling
Burbling and gurgling
Gurgling and burbling
With a dark money integrity bluster
That covers the world
In dead horse mascara
You are a dirty acupuncturist
Poking the earth with oil your rigs
Destroying its central nervous system
A gluttonous slut
Addicted to tail pipes and shallow values
You are toxic sunblock
High cholesterol shock value
A Caligula magistrate
In need of a wet nurse
And I love it
I love it
I can’t get enough
I want to devour every inch of creation with you
I want to slurp every ounce of its soup
I want to suckle on Mother Nature’s nipples
I want to feast on industrial goop
I am so hungry
I am starving
Feed me until I’m bursting
Feed me until I bloat
Feed me
Feed me
Feed me
I am a planetary cannibal
A virus in need of a host
Feed me I want it
Feed me it’s mine
Feed me I want it
Feed me it’s mine
I’ve been given dominion
Over this planet so
Feed me
Feed me
Feed me I want it
Feed me it’s mine
Feed me I want it
Feed me it’s mine
Feed me
Feed me
Feed me
Give me all you’ve got
