It feels so strange

After months of them, I don't have a single doctor visit scheduled for myself or either child. It feels so weird, like something is missing from my week.

You can have some of mine if you like! They're tons of fun.

Oh, no thank you. I actually do have something coming up. I'm supposed to do another glucose tolerance test in a couple of months to make sure I'm not diabetic, but I haven't scheduled that yet. Alex doesn't go back to the doc for a month. Livi won't need to be seen until she turns 4 in January.

How's it going with the diabetes? Have you found an insulin dosage level that's working? Are you on a pump yet?

I need to figure out where I can take my Sharps containers to dispose of all my needles. I actually still have the insulin needles from my first pregnancy too!

My insulin levels are still pretty good, so either I'm type I in a honeymoon phase where my pancreas hasn't quite given up the ghost yet, or I'm type II. They're not really sure which, but they took some blood tests at my last appt to see if there is any evidence of the common autoimmune problems that would damage the pancreas. In the meantime, my blood sugars are really well controlled by my diet and my current dose of 70/30 Novalog (mix of fast-acting and slow acting insulin), so I'm to stay on it as long as it's working. If they eventually decide I'm type II, they'll probably try to move me off of insulin shots. If I'm type I, I'll eventually need more frequent shots to keep control, and that's when I'll look into a pump.

I was lead to believe that I can drop my sharps container off at the Dr's office, but I guess I haven't verified that yet. I suppose I should call.

Well, I'm glad to hear that your diabetes is so well controlled now. Are you using pens for your insulin? I have about half a box of needles still. If I pass my next glucose tolerance test, want me to send them your way?

I wish I could find someone to use the insulin pens I still have. I don't think the diabetes center can take them to give out to other patients. I just hate the thought of having to throw them away.

at the hospital, we've been told not to share the pens between patients because even though you use different needles, since the needle inserts into the pen, there's a slight chance for something commmunicable being passed through it.

Oh no, I wouldn't give my partially used pens to someone else. I still have unused pens in my fridge. Those are the ones that would be a total waste to throw away.
