My diabetes dietician and nurse want my fasting blood sugar (first thing in the morning) level to be less than 90, and 1 hour post-meal readings to be less than 120. The past couple of weeks they've asked me to check occasionally right before meals as well, to get a better idea of how my blood sugar is behaving throughout the day. I've found that sometimes an hour after a meal, my blood sugar is ok, but an hour after that it's climbed, especially when I've had breads or other grains as the bulk of my carbs. (I've just about have to give up eating rice.)
This morning, I had a light yoghurt drink for breakfast (14 grams of carbs, equal to one serving). I'm supposed to have 2-3 carb servings for breakfast, so I grabbed a couple of Twizzlers to make up the difference. An hour later, my blood sugar was a little high at 143, which was disappointing. Just now, I checked my pre-lunch level and it came out as a staggering 295, the highest reading I've *ever* gotten. There was no reason it should have been that high, since it had been 3 hours since I had breakfast. I freaked a moment, then checked again using another finger and got a reading of 80. Big difference, and much more what I was expecting. I checked again using a third finger and got 78.
After getting the two low readings, I think I know what happened. I just made sandwiches for Livi and myself, peanut butter and honey (so good!). Even when I'm careful making them can get a little messy and sticky, so I must have had a little honey on the first finger I checked.
Should be interesting to see my blood sugar reading in an hour. Hopefully it will be under a billion.
