Ashes

Title: Ashes
Rating: PG-13 for some graphic descriptions and angst.
Summary: Hagrid is sent to go find Harry. Written for this week's Contrelamontre challenge, but since it's general, I'm posting it here.
Pairing: None, it’s Gen. At most maybe a slight Hagrid/Lily hinting, but Hagrid’s the book’s big loyal teddy bear, so I doubt it. Chances are you’ve read at least book one, so no spoilers to be had.
Fandom: Harry Potter
Feedback: Yes, please.
Disclaimer: Not mine, and the characters belong to J. K. Rowling. If they were mine, Harry would be here right next to me wondering why I’m writing about smut when I could be… ow. *looks at the cat funny*

“I can write down only this for sure: They have left the farm. They are going somewhere.” Lorna Crozier.

When he gave you back your pink umbrella and you felt the remains of your wand encased in the handle, you knew it had to be serious business.

“Make sure you find the baby,” Professor Dumbledore told you. “And don’t waste any time looking for James or Lily. Nothing can be done for them now.”

Dumbledore got permission from the Ministry for you to Apparate if necessary, but Sirius lent you his motorcycle for the task.

It was with those words that you rushed over to the Potter farm to begin your frantic search for the little one. You arrived on that motorcycle in record time.

The rumors alone were not enough to prepare you for the charred horror that remained of the cabin. You know you’ve seen coal in better shape.

You used your large hands to start moving support beams out of the way, to topple the remains of the roof pieces to look in what’s left of the living room.

It was there that you found James’ body first, and he was almost unrecognizable. At least when the baby grows up, you can tell him that his father put up a good fight.

You’ve seen a lot of the results of the Avada Kedavra curse lately, but nothing ever looked like James Potter’s.

You found Lily’s body next to what remained of the crib. Aside from a bruise across her cheek her body was free of any marks.

She looked as if she was merely sleeping.

For the only time in your life, you disobeyed Dumbledore’s direct order and took a few minutes to cry, cradling Lily’s body to your chest and rocky back and forth in the middle of the burnt out cabin.

She was a sweet little witch, and was always good to everyone, especially to you. She didn’t deserve a death like this.

No one does.

You were just beginning to wonder how in the world a baby was supposed to have survived in a wreck such as this one when you first heard the cry.

Harry…

You begin to search frantically again for the baby, overturning bits of the nursery in your wake and living up to your giant side of the family, for another five minutes before it hits you.

Those cries are coming from under the crib. You scramble in the ruins covered in soot to lift it out of the way.

You found the boy, sniffling as he lay curled up on one side, trying to sleep. As you approach, he turns over and looks at you.

“Mummy? Daddy?” he sniffled and looked around curiously.

Picking him up and heading back to the bike, you grabbed a baby blanket that you find in the remains of his nursery and wrap him carefully.

Little Harry sniffled and tugged on your beard while making a satisfied gurgle, and you looked down into his small face.

His eyes were green like his mother’s and his hair was as untidy as his father’s. But you’ve seen that before.

It’s the scar that gets your attention on his forehead, bright green from and in the shape of a lightning bolt. It was still glowing.

That scar was the remains of the Avada Kedavra curse. You marvel at it.

How could someone as tiny as a baby survive that curse when his parents, two of the best wizards out there, could not?

Not wanting to waste any more time thinking, you hopped on Sirius’ borrowed bike and took flight.

Little Harry was already falling asleep.
