So after our nice drive to Amherst my dad and I went to Chili's and I noticed a sign hanging that said "Marshals Office."
Note the lack of an apostrophe. I thought this was a little weird. I thought, well, if it's the office of a single Marshal, there should be an apostrophe after the "l" resulting in "Marshal's Office." And if it was the office of multiple Marshals then wouldn't it be "Marshals' Office?"
My dad said no, and that there was no apostrophe because the office didn't belong to the Marshals. What?? So he compared it to the sign reading "Visitors Parking." There is no apostrophe there either, which my dad attributes to the lack of ownership by the Visitors.
I never learned this fact in school and it goes against my logic. It doesn't make sense to me. Do any English majors know the ACTUAL truth about this punctuation business????? It's driving me nuts!!!
