Is this thing on?
I'm not even going to look back and see how long it's been. I have no idea, and I don't honestly really want to know.
So . . . how's everyone doing? Yeah? Alright!
Oh, me? I'm dong well, you know, the usual. Life is of course a nutty, whacky thing as always. About a month ago I started my internship with Kleber & Associates, a full-service advertising and PR agency here in Atlanta that specializes in representing luxury products for the home. (That's where I am right now, probably shouldn't be on LiveJournal, but it's a slow morning, and I have nothing to do right now.) The people here are super-nice, and fun to be around. I've got my own huge office here and everything. Heh, my office is actually bigger than most people's, and it's got two desk, a big leather chair, and a door that walks out to a balcony. Rollin'.
Due to the fact that I do not happen to own a residence in Atlanta, my housing situation has been fun. (I mean that for real.) My basic plan has been to just live with someone different every week. I've been with friends, family, myself, everyone. I've commuted from Athens, Atlanta, Alpharetta, Marietta, and all spaces in between. It's been fun, and just as soon as I get back from Cuba I'll go live in other different places.
What? I didn't tell you about Cuba? Yeah, I'm leaving for Cuba in less than 48 hours. My parents got hooked into a misison trip thing to Cuba for a week this summer, and asked if I wanted to come along. Go to Cuba--a place where very few Americans ever have the opportunity to see unless they're with a university or relief group--? Where do I sign? It's going to be awesome. I don't even know what to expect. It already sounds like it's going to be crazy. We have to be at the airport at 5:00 Saturday morning, and we still don't know where we're staying because our accomodations agent was arrested last week along with all of the other ones in the Havanan airport. (The system is, when you get there, you have to make accomodations with agents that work at the airport. And apparently last week, police swept in and arrested all of them together.) We don't even really know what to expect with what we'll be doing. I think it'll consist partly of building homes or something, and I'm supposed to help play games with little kids at VBS and then also do lots of translating. (Ay, no creo que estoy preparado para traducir para congregaciones de cientos de personas, especialmente en Cuba. Debo haber estudiado. Ay de mí.) Also, I think I'm supposed to be bringing my guitar to play songs, but I have yet to learn any chords or Spanish lyrics. Maybe I should get started on that . . .
Other than that, I'm actually looking forward to this fall alot. Big new house, back with friends, new responsibilities, Obsequious.
Along the lines of the house, I just got some new furniture the other day at an estate sale, a bed and a sofa, and it looks like we might get a big screen too. Plus, that's just a cool, big house. I'm stoked.
As for friends, I was thinking to myself maybe about a month back, Yeah, I guess I can see how people get tired of Athens after a few years, which was weird because I never thought I'd think that. But then, the other night after I was pulling into town after just two weeks away, I started getting really excited. It felt like home. And then that night I randomly saw so many people that I hadn't expected to see at all, and it made me really happy. Everyone's out of the country now (or will be soon), in Spain, Budapest, Chile, England, Germany, Coasta Rica. I can't wait till they're all back here, in the boring USA.
As for my new responsibilities, holy crap. I'm going to have so much work to do. It is not going to be the lazy senior year that so many people speak of. I was elected the Publicity Chair of the Honors Program Student Council (at UGA) which means I'll basically be handling all the advertising and publicity for all of the Honors Program events next year. It'll be a bit of work, but it'll be a good way for me to stretch my advertising wings some and experiment a bit. I was also chosen to be on the Grady Dean's Council, which is an advisory panel of two members of each journalism major to the school's dean. I found out that Grady wants to revamp all of its new curriculum over the next few years, starting with advertising in the fall. That means that my friend/associate Katie and I will have a hand in designing the new advertising curriculum along with the dean and other professors. That's pretty awesome. On top of that--and this will probably be where the most work will be--I am also the director of AdWorks next year. AdWorks is UGA's student-run, free, full-service advertising agency. We do work mostly for small businesses in the region. But essentially, I'm in charge of setting up the entire operation, finding clients, organizing teams, everything. I have an assistant, but she's clueless. She's had intro to advertising. Basically this is going to equal mucho trabajo. But it'll be a great experience . . . plus an awesome addition to my résumé.
And then there's Obsequious. Dave and I have talked about it, and we really want to do more, practice more, write more, have more shows. Not only that but be better, better musicians, better entertainers, everything. I listened to those songs that we recorded on my computer back in October in my car this morning on the way to work . . . and they're hilarious! We just need to work on the entire package, polish things up, and get better. We also have to record at least some sort of CD this year too, just as a record of what we've done. We also need a drummer. So, if anyone in Athens wants to play drums for the best rock band ever to be compiled, let me know.
Geez. Seniors. I can't believe it. Seriously. I only have a year of college left. That is terrifying, not really necessarily because it means that I'm going have to leave for the real world in a year (because it doesn't) but because I just have no idea how it's flow so quickly. It's been a blast, and personally I know that I've come so far from when I first walked past those big, black arches, but man, I can't believe it's almost over. Man. I'm getting all nostalgic for the past three years and even for next year, even though it hasn't even come yet. It's crazy. It really is.
Oh well. At least I've decided that after graduation I'm going to move to Brazil for a little bit and then come back here and go to advertising creative school for two years. But I'll just have to learn that as a cliff-hanger until the next time I update (whenever that may be). Also, I'll have to tell you about rats, tattoos, and everything in between. (Hope you can handle the suspense!) Anyway, God bless, and I'll catch up with you soon.
