Summerslam Spoilers*****
So I just got back from watching WWEs Summerslam PPV at my friend Patrick's house....and it was actually worth a breakdown from me. Sorta decent show.
The show started up with the usual pyro yadda yadda....then went through the Smackdown...Raw...and ECW commentators. So many commentators....so many belts. Something worth noting...every single match on the card was a singles match!
Match 1: Rey Mysterio Jr vs Chavo Guerrero
The beef behind this match is Chavo feeling Rey is riding off Eddie's untimely death. Chavo uses the fact that Rey "isn't Eddies blood" to fuel the fire. Showed lots of clips of each wrestler with Eddie and all the success they had as tag team champs with Eddie at different times. Actually got me kinda emotional seeing Eddie again....easily one of the best all around wrestlers of all time.
So the match was mostly brawling...nothing really high-flying or exciting that you'd expect from these two...aside from a couple planchas onto the outside. More brawling...the finish had Eddies wife come out. Shes upset with both Chavo and Rey for fighting and begins to cry or something....and then proceed to slap Chavo for not listening. Rey seems to have the upperhand and climbs the top rope...and Eddies wife climbs the apron and accidentally knocks Rey down. Chavo points to the heavens before hitting the frog splash for the 3.
Winner: Chavo
Match Quality - 3.5/10 (Expected so much more from them)
Match 2: ECW Heavyweight Championship - Sabu vs The Big Show(C)
So RVD sucks and got caught with drugs...ergo Paul Heyman strips him of the belt and puts it on Show. Show them plows through X-amount of opponents on ECW... (I love how "ECW's" main events have been Big Show vs Batista...vs Kane...vs Undertaker...vs Flair...I actually havent seen a real ECW wrestler in the main event in months..)
So they give Show some Champ cred (BTW, Big Show is the only wrestler ever to hold the WWE, WCW and ECW titles) and even incorporate RVD and Angle into the fued...but RVD is a pot head and Angle got injured.....so tonight we have the homocidal, suicidal, genocidal Sabu vs the largest athlete in Sports Entertainment!
Match was extreme rules...so we saw lots and lots of chairs, tables, and steel in general. Show hits a nice drop toe hold onto sabu who goes face first into a chair ala Raven style....then Show got mad at the chair and stomped on it, bending the shit out of it before tossing it out of the ring. Cool beans.
The match wrapped up with Show setting up a table's legs onto a two pieces of steel steps....... basically just making the table raise higher off the ground....Sabu then came out of nowhere, jumped off the table onto the ropes, and then tornado-DDT'ed-ish Big Show onto the table...would have been REALLY awesome but the table slipped out from under Sabu and so he had to semi-recover...and he held onto Big Show for a second akwardly...taking the fans out of the moment. After Show went through the table...Sabu set up another table...and then bounced off the ropes onto the table...but show got up quickly and slammed Sabu through said table. Prettyt sweet. 1.2.3.
Winner: And still Champ...Big Show.
Match Rating: 4/10 (The botched DDTas well as other spots...and the handling of it, hurt the score)
Match 3: Legend vs Legend Killer - Randy Orton vs Hulk Hogan.
Hogan gets the fattiest pop of the night. It got be fuckin pumped up. It made me want to be there....the huge sea of red shirts with 'Hulkamania' on them...kids...grandkids....grandparents...people of all ages were going crazy for Hogan. Pretty awesome to not have to do jack-squat and people respect you for all youve done throughout the years....and in the match, Hogan still knew how to work a crowd.
You know the drill..... Hogan overpowered Orton and the crowd cheered....Orton then gets the upperhand and works on hogans legs...Orton goes to slam Hogans head into the turnbuckle...but hes blocked three times...Hulk Up....Hogan goes for the big boot but Orton dodges! RKO! Orton goes for the pin! 1! 2! 3!
The ref counts the three...but Hogan had gotten his boot on the ropes! the ref sees this mistake and calls for the match to continue...an already celebrating Orton is horrified. (How come on RAW and Smackdown when a ref see's the errors of his way, the commentators usually say "Well, whats done is done..and the decision has already been made" but when it suits their favor...the ref can go back on his decision?)
Hogan hits the big boot and the leg drop...and 123.
Winner: The Immortal Hulk Hogan
Match Quality: 6/10 (For Fan participation and electricity factor)
It was pretty cool watching Hogan continue to feed to the crowd after the match. He would do the "ear thing" and the fans seated on the opposite side of the camera were the loudest so he kept playing to them...and the crowd to the "right" of the camera were pretty lame from Hogans reaction. Just kinda funny because he kept giving them chances and them would give them a "BAH!" reaction and point back to the other side of the crowd who would POP hella hard.
Match 4: "I quit Match" Mick Foley vs "Nature Boy" Ric Flair
Before the match Melina warns Foley, saying she cant see him winning tonight..and doesnt wanna be associated with losers. Foley says he wont say "I quit"
Fuckin' hardcore man. I have to give Ric Flair his props...every damn PPV he comes out and gets his ass fuckin handed to him..and hes so old. I cant remember the last time i saw him not left in the ring a fuckin bloody mess. Well...this time just might be different...
Flair and Foley have beef in real life...and they really didnt hold back. I was trying to figure out who was going to come out to the bigger pop...Foley or Flair....Foley came out first and got hardly any reaction...then I remembered Foley is from Staten Island. Foley had the upperhand, and busted out Mr socko early on. He put the mic up to flairs lips and asked him to say "I quit" or else there would only be more pain. Foley then wraps socko up in barbed wire and goes for the mandible claw again! really gross. Flair gets a hold of the sock and starts knife edge choppin foley across the chest with the barbed-socko. DAMN, It just gets worse and worse....barbed wire baseball bats...thumbstacks in every place imaginable...boards with barbed wire....and blood EVERYWHERE.....Flair knocks Foley off the apron and onto the rampway and EMTS come out and it looks like Foley has hurt his neck and cant go on.....Flair wont have any of it and attacks Foley. later Melina comes out to throw in the towel for a Foley who wont quit...but Flair wont have it and says hes gonna murder foley....and only until Flair goes after melina with the barbed wire bat does Foley give in and say I quit.
Winner: Ric Flair
Match Quality: 6.5/10 (For pure gory factor)
Match 5: World Heavyweight Championship - King Booker(C) vs Batista
So once again the Smackdown Belt holds really no weight and is a mid-card afterthought....sometime earlier in the show Edge and Lita confronted Booker and Sharmell. They bickered about who was the most powerful couple in Sports Entertainment. They wager a bet....if Booker keeps his belt...Edge has to go onto Smackdown and kiss Bookers feet...and if Edge successfully defends his belt, Booker has to come and be Edge's servant on RAW for a night.
I just have to say I really like Bookers new gimmick...the man really gets into it and speaks all Posh-like...i find it hilarious due to the fact that Booker is in reality a fuckin ghetto ass black man. Sharmell screams "All Hail King Booker!" ATLEAST 30 times as they make their way to the ring. Awesome. Batista comes out...meh...I wanna root for him because hes Filipino/Spanish like me...but i gotta admit im behind Booker in this one.
Sharmell hits Batista with the sceptor....but Batista eventually comes back and kicks out of a scissor kick and a book-end. Batista hits a Jackhammer and the crowd chants GOOOOOOOOOOOLDBERG....GOOOOOOOOOOOLLLDBERG.......and Sharmell comes in and saves Booker, getting him DQ'ed but keeping the belt. Batista gets a Batista bomb after the bell.
Winner: Batista via DQ
Match Quality: 2/10
Match 6: DX vs The Mcmahons
Now I know i said there were no tag matches on the card....and youll see why in a minute.
So prematch crap include Vince and Shane talking to Estrada...who assures them Umaga's got their backs. Later DX goes to talk to a mystery person, and tells this person that the Mcmahons had just got done calling Umaga a Monster and a Machine. This makes the person angry.
DX enters. Mcmahons enter...but before they go to the ring they call out the spirit squad. DX does away with the squad like they were the NWO Black n White. Mcmahons have more tricks up their sleeves however...as they call out Mr Kennedy.....and then Regal and Finlay. DX manages to take care of them as well...but then Mcmahon calls out Big Show...show demolishes HBK and then heads over to HHH on the outside, who gets a 4 on 1 beating (Have no idea where the spirit squad went)
The most of the match consisted of HBK getting doubleteamed by Shane and Vince as HHH is laid out on the outiside. He eventually comes to and tries to help...but Shane baseballs slides him and HHH goes flying into the RAW table and slamming into JR. JR kinda sorta tosses HHH away and the viewers get a laugh. HHH then lays there unconcious from a baseball slide for infinity.
Later HBK crawls to a corner JUST as HHH comes to....hes still SUPER groggy and has trouble crawling up the steel steps....I joke about how HHH will magically be refreshed once he gets the hot tag...but that actually happens and HHH goes on a clotheslining spree. HHH is about to hit the pedigree on Vince but Umaga comes out and does that thumbs throat slam thingy. Kane comes out and chases him away. Shane goes for the coast to coast on HHH but HBK "hits" him with the Sweet chin music in mid air (extremely botched and completely missed) Pedigree. 123.
Also noted...HBK reallly really hurt his arm during the match. Couldnt even move it, or do the suck it pose with HHH....couldnt even do his heartbreaker pose n could only flex his good arm. Yikes.
Winners: Degeneration X
Match Quality: 3/10
Main Event: WWE Heavyweight Championship - John Cena vs Edge (C)
So Cena comes out to the second biggest pop after Hogan...naturally...hes from Boston. I just gotta say I really believe Edge as a main eventer now...and I really really like how long and well handled this fued has been since they screwed Edge to put HHH in the main event at Wrestlemania. Edge looks good with the gold around his waist. Lets hope hes not screwed here too.
So the Canadian has the deck stacked against him - if hes Dq'ed, Cena gets the belt.
decent match...lots of good reversals...particulary Edge dodging an FU and hitting the Edgecution. Cena got a nearfall with a victory roll...couple highflying moves. Nice story telling with Cena whipping Edge into the corner where the ref was and Edge stopping and placing his hands up, scared of being DQed. Lita threw a chair into the ring and Edge shook his head frantically too. As Edge saw the title slipping away, Lita slipped him some brass knucks. Edge swings and misses and gets placed on Cenas shoulder. Lita runs into the ring, the ref decides NOT to DQ for some reason and she jumps onto Edge. Cena FUs Lita. Edge wiggles free and smacks Cena in the back of the head with the knucks and them tucks them away...the ref doesnt see and counts the 123.
Winner: And still Champ....Edge.
Match Quality - 6.5/10
PPV Score: 4.5/10
Nothing like the Summerslams of old...but it was better than that crap Smackdown put on last month...my advice is stick with TNA.
Speaking of TNA...monday night shows the return of JEFF HARDY to RAW......ouch. Thats gotta hurt TNA.
I also watched RENT for the first time with Annie, Izzy and Leanne. GOOD.
