An orange sky, a peaceful Friday noon, some ballad songs and a couple of cents. Yesung and Kyuhyun felt contented with what they’ve got after doing a small concert like usual. They do it not for living anyway, but just out for fun, to spent quality times with a good companions and songs, so when the money were gone for two cups of coffee and hotdogs to make the little gathering merrier, they just enjoy it to the fullest.
They talked random conversations, about the musical subjects at the university, how to get additional scores, about Yesung’s sudden interest for cooking, about Kyuhyun’s naughty students, and just a seconds ago, the conversation finally landed to a certain Lee Sungmin.
“So, what do you think about her?” Yesung asked after taking a good sip of his milk+ coffee and extra sugar. Yesung, despite all of his black outfit, didn’t like something too bitter.
Kyuhyun’s heart stopped for a second before finally beat a beat faster, ‘weird’ he thought, but again, decided to brushed it off of his mind. “Well, she’s nice.” He thought for a moment, before continuing his sentence, “Too nice actually, and independent.”
“How does she look like?” Yesung asked once again. His eyes were focusing on the farest pink clouds up in the sky.
Kyuhyun almost chocked by a big bite of his hotdog, “What? Hyung, have you ever met her before?”
“Nope, not yet.” Yesung shrugged. He tore his gaze from the sky, look at Kyuhyun innocently while ate his hotdog like it’s not a big deal at all.
Kyuhyun put his hotdog on the bench beside him and then massaged his temples. “Hyung, you never met her and yet you dump her? How could you? You didn’t even give her a chance.”
“What? Why? What did I miss?” Yesung asked curiously. His eyes grew bigger which each of his own questions.
“A lot.” Kyuhyun just managed to let those two words out of his throat before finally take a healthy gulp of his hot black coffee. Yesung blinked and Kyuhyun decided to just let his hyung knew the best points that a Lee Sungmin ever had. “First of all, Sungmin-shii is a very nice, humble, and kind lady. She loves kids a lot, thinking about them a lot, and play with them a lot. She’s so independent that it hurts my and Principal Shin’s pride as a man, though I’m not really sure but I think he felt the same way with me. She never asked for any help, she did everything alone, that it hurted my head. Anyway, her appearance, you must be surprised, she’s two years younger than you, which mean two years older than me, but she looked like a high schooler. You know that I’m never had a lolita complex issue before, and I’m sure I don’t have it either now, but Lee Sungmin was like a... a summer fairy. She’s... cute.” Kyuhyun’s ended his rants with short breaths and puffy pink cheeks.
Yesung stared at Kyuhyun for a while before finally squinted his eyes while poking Kyuhyun’s left cheeks with a blank face. “I see... you like her a lot.”
Kyuhyun’s eyes shot wide in a jify, “WHAT? NO!” His pink cheeks turned a couple of shades darker, looked much more like cherry tomatoes now. “I..” his limbs were flailing everywhere.
Yesung shrugged it off, trying to calm the panick Kyuhyun beside him, “Look, Kyuhyun, the point is... whatever you said, I still didn’t change my mind. I still can’t accept Sungmin-shii as my fiancee. EspeciaIly, when I have someone in mind now.”
.....
Kyuhyun felt miserable. He couldn’t help but felt guilty towards Sungmin. How can he said to her that her fiancee had found someone else in her place? He’s not in the right place to said anything private like this to her, what is he to her? Just a mere workmates for two weeks only. He reached the school with a hardcore pounding headache this morning. And it didn’t even lessen a bit during the lesson. Sungmin was so concerned that she went to the drug store accross the street to bought aspirin for him. He finally can sat up straightly when it’s already lunch time. The kids were having nap times like usual and the teacher’s lounge were crowded by the five of them.
Mrs. Shin, Seo Hyun, and Ryewook were all eating together in the wooden table in the middle of the room, while Kyuhyun and Sungmin were eating their lunch on their own desk. Kyuhyun didn’t want to be awkward eating among the ladies because he’s the only guy while Sungmin was doing something on her desk while eating. Suddenly, Mrs. Shin spoke up after swallowing the meatball in her mouth. “So, Kyuhyun-shii, do you have any girlfriend?”
Upon this question, Kyuhyun himself almost chocked up with the water, Seo Hyun looked like she was holding a breath, maybe afraid of losing the answer if she’s breathing, Sungmin, well Sungmin seemed a little bit weird because she’s also looked slightly stiffened for a second or so before going back to normal, while Ryeowook was the only one with a really normal expression on her face, seemed lost in her own thought.
“To be honest, well, I don’t have any. “ Kyuhyun blushed, didn’t know why but he had this urge to look at Sungmin’s expression and not Seo Hyun’s. So, he frowned a little when he found out that Sungmin was actually munching her lunch while writting something in her usual composure.
“So you guys are all single here? I really don’t understand, you guys are so young and have reached the age for having a serious relationship, but you all seemed didn’t care about it.” Mrs. Shin frowned.
“It’s not like we don’t care, mom.” Seo Hyun spoke.
“For me, it’s more like there’s no one who interested in me.” Sungmin giggled... and Kyuhyun stole a realllyyyyy quick glance at her.
“You’re kidding, right unnie?” Seo Hyun giggled.
“Tell me about it, I saw lots of her admirers following her everywhere, just like cats to a fish.” Kyuhyun butted in while laughing.
Sungmin pouted the cutest pout, and Kyuhyun’s feeling something funny in his stomach. “Hey, I’m not a fish.” She said while throwing a small paper ball to his direction.
Mrs. Shin’s face suddenly turned brighter, “Oh! How about that Siwon-shii?”
“What about him?” Kyuhyun couldn’t help but asking too. Sungmin just smiled warmly and this drove Kyuhyun frowned.
“He’s a nice gentleman.” Sungmin answered while still smiling. And after a short pause, she continued. “Actually, I already had a fiancee.” Kyuhyun, didn’t know why, felt like he had a sudden heart attack. “But I never met him before. Our parents hooked us up. It’s been about one month after they entertained me with the idea, but the so called fiancee of mine never show himself up. I guess he just didn’t interested in me.”
‘Stupid Yesung.’ Kyuhyun palmed his face. She’s right, she already knew it. Guess it would be easier for him to delivered the message now.
“Great, the more reason for you to accept Siwon-shii instead.” Mrs. Shin chuckled.
“I’m still lost. Who is this Siwon-shii, anyway?” Kyuhyun frowned even deeper.
Seo Hyun giggled once again, “Siwon-shii, is a very handsome widower. He’s the father of Lee Donghae, and for all I know, he’s been courting Sungmin-unnie for almost half a year now.”
“He didn’t, Seo Hyun.” Sungmin smiled.
“That’s not what we see, right Mom?” Seo Hyun exchanged giggles with her very own mother.
Sungmin looked at her pink wrist watch, and having realized the time, she immediately stood up while reaching for two box filled with cookies and small milk boxes for the kids. “Well, anyway, as much as I want to indulge in this childish debate with both of you, I have to go back to my kids.” She let out a very bright smile. Kyuhyun, upon seeing her struggled a bit with the boxes, was standing up too.
“Do you need any he..”
But Seo Hyun’s voice cut him off for good from the other side of the room, “Kyuhyun-shii, do you mind to help me to bring all of these?”
Both Sungmin and Kyuhyun look at her who was standing in front of the same boxes that Sungmin was holding in her arms right now. Sungmin smiled knowingly and then whispered to Kyuhyun, “Go! I can handle these.” And went dissapeared behind the door, leaving the dumbstruck Kyuhyun and the smiling Seo Hyun.
.....
Didn’t know since when or how, but Kyuhyun felt that Sungmin can read whatever in his mind. He even thought that she was actually could feel Kyuhyun’s little crush towards Seo Hyun too, because she’s always giving them more opportunity to be together. Like those times when Kyuhyun were alone with her and then Seo Hyun suddenly came up, Sungmin always found a way to excused herself without being too obvious and gave him a reassurance wink or smile after that.
It’s not that he didn’t like being alone with Seo Hyun or what, she’s his crush for God’s sake, but somehow, it’s just bothered him. And what bothered him more was because he didn’t know why he even felt bothered.
That noon, it was raining heavily. Kyuhyun was looking for his umbrella on his backpack when he spotted two figures standing in front of the front door. Turns out it was Sungmin and Donghae. Lee Donghae was one of the naughty Lee brats duo in Sungmin’s class. Together with his monkey friend, they were so active and always smiling, asking the weirdest questions in class, if not dancing. As soon as he found his umbrella, he walked up to them.
“Sungmin-shii.” He called.
Sungmin turned and smiled to him. “Going for the university, Kyuhyun-shii?”
“Yeah.” Kyuhyun smiled shyly.
“You’re a hard worker.”
“I’m not.” This time, he blushed. And then he suddenly look at Donghae who was staring at him the whole time, “Are you going home with Miss Sungmin, Hae? Do you guys have any umbrella? We can share if you don’t. This umbrella of mind is really wide.”
But before Sungmin could answer, Seo Hyun suddenly appeared before them. “Kyuhyun-shii, do you mind if I share an umbrella with you until the train station? I forgot to bring mine.” Seo Hyun smiled with her puppy smile eyes on full force.
Kyuhyun couldn’t help but think, how can this girl always seemed to appear everytime he was going to offer something to Sungmin? This’s weird. “Well, I’m sorry, Seo Hyun-shii. But I...”
“It’s okay, Kyuhyun-shii. I’m not going home yet anyway. We are actually standing here to wait for someone to pick him up, right Hae?”
The little kid smiled widely, showing his set of milky with teeth. “Yes, Miss.”
“Then, what are we waiting for? Let’s go Kyuhyun-shii.” Seo Hyun smiled brightly to all of them. She even managed to nudge the standing still Kyuhyun beside him to opened up his umbrella and dragged him to the gate. Sungmin and Donghae are waving happily to them and Seo Hyun’s also waving back. Kyuhyun was just bowing apologetically and he got another reassuring wink from Sungmin. It felt weird. Somehow, he felt that something’s not right.
On their way to the gate, Kyuhyun and Seo Hyun saw a very good looking guy walking with an umbrella to the direction of the school building. He was tall, with a very lean body, nice hair cut, thick jet black eyebrows, sharp nose, define jaw lines, a very well sculpted face and body. The guy had stopped short for a while to nod and smiled a very gorgeous dimpled smile to Seo Hyun before resumming his journey. Well, to make it short, the man looked like a God.
Seo Hyun smiled back and after the guy was out of the earshot range, she sighed. Just before Kyuhyun asked who was that, she suddenly spoke, “He is Siwon-shii, the father of Lee Donghae.”
Kyuhyun’s eyes getting bigger at the word but he tried his best to looked calm. Secretly and silently, he stole a glance back just in the right time to witnessed when Hae sprinted his way to Siwon and the taller man catched him and then lifted his child up high. The both of them were smiling brightly and Sungmin was there, smiling with them. Looked exactly like a husband who went to picked up his son and wife. A perfect portrait of a small happy family.
And Kyuhyun couldn’t help but felt a weird uncomfortable feeling with a tint of hurt in his chest right now.
