So peeps, I have decided to become vegan.
It's not a light decision. I read a little literature on the subject, and thought about it. You know, I have ducks, chickens, fish, a pig, and dogs and cats. I also have crustaceans--Hermit crabs. I love all my guys. Each one has an awesome personality and is absolutely gorgeous in their own way. I could never eat any of my guys. I just couldn't do it. And my chickens--raising my babies has been one of the most rewarding things ever. They're confined, yeah, just until we get them a larger pen. They fly, and have the prettiest feathers. Just yesterday my mom threw a cricket in there, and Squishy, the cockerel, got it, until Spot (the larger, older pullet) stole it and ran around their crate making "Don't steal my cricket!" noises. Doodle, the small, slightly off pullet has come such a long way--her feathers are absolutely gorgeous, she's bigger, and she even roosts in the top dowels with the other three chickens. How can I eat these chickens, or eat other chickens? Hell, I'm not gonna lie--I love a good chicken broth soup like everyone else. I love chicken nuggets, and fish filets cooked just right, and a good hamburger. And that makes it ten times better that I'm doing this, and ten times more meaningful for me.
Have you heard about the way they treat animals? They starve cows until they're half dead, and one "farm" even pushed them around with a bulldozer, breaking their legs and other horrible things. And they didn't give them a vet, either. And they keep chickens and cows inside so they never see the light of day. Of course, this is an over-generalization, but doesn't this disgust you? It should. Pesticides get dumped by the tons on grass and eaten, animals are given hormones and that is making children age faster. If you want to eat meat and dairy products, spend the extra dollar (actually, a gallon of organic milk is cheaper at walmart) and get organic, or at least cruelty-free.
Okay, end "preachy-ness" I suppose. I'm so glad that I made this decision at mom's house. If I did at dad's, he'd make fun of me. Or, he'd support me, but when we'd go out he'd make a big show about whatever meat/fish he'd be eating. He does it all the time, especially with crab/crawfish. He knows how much I hate seeing lobsters and crabs in tanks in stores, but yet he'd be the one to pick out a lobster and eat it in front of me, lavishly and with great show. Grr >.>
Anyway, so, it's off for Persy to get a job so she can afford slightly more expensive vegan products! But I think it'll be okay for me to eat lacto (milk, cheese products) foods very seldom and only for special occasions, like my birthday :DD
I don't like egg (ovo) products anyway.
On a very happy side note, I found a very nice lady who also adopts fish and goldfish! She has a gorgeous hybrid calico telescope eye/fantail goldfish, and she's amazing. She even has one black and one white eye :DD Of course, the coloring most likely won't hold, and will change, but that doesn't matter. Here's a picture:
Isn't she pretty? :DDD
