Genre:  AU, comedy, general.

Summary: Written as a parallel to the story Of Spirits and Circuses by Enola Jones, The Monkees discover Micky’s hidden circus past after they get temporary jobs working with the circus that came to town.

Author’s note: Since this takes place during Enola’s Cycle Blind series it is best that you read her stories, especially Of Spirits and Circuses, first in order to understand certain elements of this story.

A little more than a week earlier…

Silence descended as Micky determined that Mike was listening. Even though he felt a bit apprehensive about what he was going to say, he continued.

“You know how I said I used to work in a circus?” Mike confirmed with a simple “yes”. “Well I didn’t actually say what I did in the circus. I was a child performer.” Again, he broke off as he felt the overwhelming haunting of his past overtake him.

“Micky…” Mike started with concern in his voice, sensing a problem. “Did something happen to you while working in the circus?”

Micky sighed. He did not want to bring up these specific memories to any of his friends. But then he thought rather than be continuingly haunted by them while working their temporary grifter jobs, he decided it would be better to speak about them at least to one friend in order to keep him at ease.

“Yeah… yeah you could say that. But Mike… before I tell you what happened… promise me that it won’t leave this room.”

“This must be pretty big then.” He swung his legs over the side of the bed and angled his body towards the bed across the room. Despite the darkness, he tried looking directly at Micky. “You have my word. I won’t say anything.”

Micky sighed before slowly sitting up. Without knowing how Mike was seated, he sat up in a perfectly mirrored position.  His head hung low as he sat silently for a few minutes. After a couple hesitated starts, he finally managed to share what was on his mind.

“Ok I was kidnapped as a kid once…”

“But your family was so poor they gave the ransom note to the neighbors. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You said that before. It wasn’t funny then or now.”

“Mike, I’m not trying to be funny!” He paused with a sigh. “I really was kidnapped. It was a very traumatic experience  for me.”

“Oh…” Mike was stunned silent for a second. “Sorry, Mick, I had no idea.”

“How could you? Anyway, I was about ten years old and my parents took me to see the circus. Shortly before the show, I wandered off to check out the sideshow acts. I was running around, having all kinds of fun. Took me a little bit to realize my parents weren’t around. But when I realized it, I got scared. I started running around, trying to find my parents. One of the circus performers found me and got me to calm down. He told me he’d help me find my parents. Well I thought I could trust him. Still don’t know why I did.” He shook his head.” Should of never gone with him. Because instead of helping me find my parents, he was actually trying to find a place to stash me.”

“Stash you?”

“Hide me out somewhere, where my parents or anyone else for that matter couldn’t find me. Next thing I know, he shoves me into this trailer that was used to store costumes and some of the props, and he told me to be quiet. I was about to scream out for help, finally realizing what was really going on. But he gagged me and locked the trailer door with me inside. I must have been there most of the night before he returned from doing the show.”

“Mick… I’m so sorry. What happened? What did you do?”

“When he came back, he told me that he was going to take care of me now since my parents no longer wanted me.” Micky sat quietly for a moment. He mentally thanked the darkness in that moment because he couldn’t handle Mike seeing him right then. “After that he forced me into the circus, claiming to everyone else that I had run away. I was too scared to speak up for myself and set them straight. By that time it was too late to say I was kidnapped anyway, because the circus was already traveling to the next town.”

Mike let out a low whistle. “Who would do such a thing to a little kid like that?’

“Well… it was Victor.”

“Victor? That knife thrower from yesterday?”

“The very same. He personally bleached my hair blonde, changed my name to Corky so my parents wouldn’t be able to locate me, and he made me lie to everybody. At first I hated being there and all I wanted was to go home. After a while, though, I grew to like it in the circus… That is until Victor began abusing me…” Micky began shaking as he recalled the terrible memories. Fighting back tears, he could no longer continue with his story.

Sensing that things had grown too sensitive for Micky, Mike thought it was best to end the conversation. They lied back down, quietly basking in the darkness of the room. It wasn’t known whether sleep would come to them while the conversation was still fresh on their minds, but they knew for their jobs in the morning, they had better try to sleep. As they lay there, trying to get to sleep, they knew that their time working for the circus with Victor around was most likely going to be rough.
