Inui knew he should just go to bed.
He was useless like this anyway. His mind was in that fuzzy state sleep deprivation brought - getting distracted by the slightest tangent of attention, constantly losing his line of thought... He had to at least reprocess everything thrice before he could move on to the next step. It was a waste of time and energy.
And his eyes burnt; everything was too bright, too sharp, almost surreal in the extra contrast his overworking eyes dealt out. He felt nauseous from facing the glaring screen for so long. His back and shoulder ached from keeping the same posture for hours. This was doing no good to his body.
But still Inui pressed on. It would not do to give up when he was so close to discovering the perfect solution. He knew it was there, only one step out of reach. He was going to cross the distance, right this moment...
And the next... And the next. The answer stayed ever elusive.
Inui was persistent, though. He would solve all that mystery. Tonight. He was certain of that. Everything else did not matter; the final outcome would be so brilliant as to make up for it all. Perseverance would pay off.
So Inui pushed his glasses up again, and let his fingers fly across the keyboard. The buzz and glare and aches soon drowned away in the mesmerising graphs and tables, forgotten once more.
