Yesterday morning I was in the office (it's a separate building) counting money and getting the cashier's drawers ready for the day when I heard a knock on the door. I figured it was one of the kids saying I had a phone call (usually a telemarketer or some crap). When I opened the door I saw Rob (our head cook whose last day is Saturday). He said, "I'm not coming in today." I almost made a smart-assed remark, "well you're already here" but I could tell by the look on his face something was wrong. I stepped out of the office and I asked him if he was sick and if everything was okay. He said, "My sister died last night, well really this morning." I didn't know what to say. I said "Oh gosh Rob I'm sorry" but sorry doesn't really cut it. I was really glad I hadn't made a wise crack at him when I opened the door. I asked him if he needed a ride anywhere (he normally walks to work), but he said his mom was out front. I said, "You won't be coming in the rest of the week. That's okay. You just take care of yourself." He turned to leave and just paused. I could see in his face how upset he was. I reached out to him and he turned and gave me a big hug and we just stood there hugging for a while. He hugged me really tight which is unusual for Rob. He usually does the half hug pat on the back thing. I asked him if he had my number and he could call me or Mo or anyone here if he needed anything. People say things like that and don't really mean it but with Rob it's different. He's such a good kid and has worked for Sam's for a few years. It's like a little family here and people do care about him and would do whatever they could to help him through this.
After he left I called Mo to let him know. I didn't know how it happened or which sister it was (he has a twin and an older sister who has kids). I didn't feel it was right to ask. Actually at the time I didn't even think of those things. I didn't tell any of the kids up front. I just said that he had a family emergency and wouldn't back. I figure they would find out soon enough. Most of the younger kids hang out together and are really close with Rob. I thought I would wait until after lunch to let them know. Mo ended up telling Turtle and the cooks, I told the girls at the registers.
I found out today (in the newpaper) that it was Rob's twin sister. She and her boyfriend were going to Rob's house after she got off work at 2:30am and were speeding. Her boyfriend ran a red light 2 blocks from his house and they were struck by a pick up truck on her side. She was only 20 yrs old.
I couldn't imagine if I lost my sister or another member of my family. We are so close.
