She doesn’t want to leave her boys. Ever. It’s this wild panic in the pit of her stomach, telling her to hold on to them, to dig in her heels and her nails and refuse to go anywhere. But, somehow, she makes herself say “Goodnight” and turn toward the door. She’ll go upstairs, she’ll lie awake and she’ll wait for the meteor shower to seal her fate. There is nothing left for her but the inevitable.
Because Audrey Parker is practical and self-contained and unselfish. Because she doesn’t belong to herself, even if Nathan and Duke will always belong to her. Because asking them for what she really wants tonight might just be asking too much. Stay with me. Don’t let me go. Help me forget that it’s my last night on Earth.
But, as usual, Duke knows what she wants without her having to put it into words. He knows her better angels, and her worse ones, too. He’s the first to cross the room, to stop her hand on the knob and stroke the backs of her fingers. He rests his chin on her shoulder. His hair spills forward to tickle her cheek. He smells like smoke and sea salt and bittersweet bourbon. “Audrey,” he whispers, in that half-teasing, half-serious way that no one else seems to be able to parse. “You don’t have to be alone. Not tonight.”
Behind them, Nathan makes a sound that might be outrage, might be understanding. Her strong, silent Nathan…always trying to protect her, even if it’s from her own desires. And from his.
She leans back into Duke, drawing strength from the curve of his body. Duke’s always been a little bent. Nathan is straight lines and squares and…and a sharply in-drawn breath as he joins them, slipping his arm around her waist and leaning his forehead against her temple. “Parker,” he says, like someone else might say “I want you” or “I love you.” And his whole beautiful body rocks with tremors as he feels her: cheek to nose, shoulder fitting into the hollow of his throat, hip to groin. He’s hard for her. Duke is, too. And Audrey finally, finally lets herself be soft.
“Stay with me,” she tells them, as they strip off her clothes, as their own buttons and zippers and belts go the way of their doubts. The interior of the Gull is cold, but they warm her, warm each other, touching with interlaced fingers and the tentative brushes of lips.
“Don’t let me go,” she begs when Duke lays her down on the nearest table and Nathan bends to kiss her. His tongue is so much less moral than the rest of him, filthy and eloquent, telling her everything he doesn’t say out loud. They play a game of telephone, her, Nathan and Duke…passing whispers and promises back and forth until the messages are garbled. Until all she hears is the blood pounding against her eardrums, crashing waves reminding her that she hasn’t drowned yet, that she’s still alive.
But even as she tastes Nathan, marks Duke, and claims them both as her own, Audrey never quite forgets that it’s her last night on Earth. It’s there every time she welcomes Nathan inside her and every time Duke licks deep. She can’t fight the inevitable. She can only embrace it. So, she holds on to her boys until sunrise. And then she says “Goodbye” and turns toward the door.
