I figure since Merlin is on tonight, I might as well prime myself with other v.v. gay viewing, so I popped in Shelter, which I had from Netflix. And oh, my heart! Loved, loved, this sweet little film. Though, seriously, I don't know if it's my years as a soap viewer or what, I kept expecting some Awful, Horrible Twist to occur. One in particular, actually...
I was almost 90% certain that the movie was going to take an icky turn, where Zach's sister, Jeannie, accused Shaun of molesting Cody. I was SO GLAD I WAS WRONG.
In fact, the movie surprised by veering away from some of the more obvious LGBT movie tropes. Gabe wasn't homophobic, and despite Jeanne's general anti-gay comments, the crux of the conflict between her and Zach was that she wanted him to sacrifice his life for hers. And nobody tried to kill themselves!
The visuals were incredibly effective, and you really got the sense of Zach being trapped yet yearning to be free. and the close angle shots of Zach and Shaun together were breath-taking. I definitely have to buy this one and add it to my permanent collection.
Speaking of movies, I actually FORGOT that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was premiering this week. Oops. Must remember to get a ticket to see it!
