So, I posted a fic in friends-lock last night --locked primarily because I had some other "ack!" issues going on with it -- and, then, this morning, woke up with even MORE "ack!" issues and promptly made it a private post.
Here's my concern: I'm afraid of criticism --even from just my friends list-- for using a cultural tragedy as a setting for slash. I know this has been a HUGE issue for fandom in the past, with people referencing the Killing Fields and the Holocaust in fanfic and it just being completely inappropriate, so after sleeping on it, I really got worried that I was overstepping boundaries and doing something trigger-y.
Consequently, here's what I want to ask: Is it appropriate to use a horrible event in recent history as a backdrop for a fanfic if the characters have actually been there? Or is that still just something you don't touch?
