So, I got home around 5:15 this morning (whee!) and woke up around 1:45 p.m. Not bad, eh? Went and saw Live Free or Die Hard last night and had an absolute blast. It was lots of fun, nothing deep. It's John McClane. He blows shit up. He's awesome. (He pwns Rocky Balboa...) 'Nuff said. (Okay, maybe not 'nuff said,' because I'm seriously tempted to write the wrongest of wrong McClane/Farrell fics.) Tiff and then I caroused for several hours, which led to my early morning return.
But, pfft, that's not why we're here today posting, folks. We don't care that I was out late! No, what's important is that I just watched Doctor Who, "Last of the Time Lords!"
1. Jack's the FACE OF BOE!!!!! OMG. Nobody spoiled that for me, so I was giddy about the reveal. It was so pricelessly cute the way the Doctor and Martha looked at each other and kept gasping, "Nooooo!" and helplessly laughing. And, *sob*, it makes his death even more devastating now and despite the hilarity of the reveal, it makes me wonder why the ancient one never revealed to the Doctor who he really was. Vanity, perhaps?
1a. What the shit is up with Jack not SNOGGING ANYBODY? Dude, Uncle Rusty, did you just expect to blow your load with the Master/Doctor hoyay and therefore leave none for our favorite Cap'n? (Jack, by the way, wins major points for going back to Ianto Torchwood.)
2. Speaking of hoyay, the Master's fate was such the Return of the Jedi Vader/Luke confrontation... just about ten thousand times more inappropriate. I half expected the Tatooine theme to play as the Doctor lit his pyre. Hee. But in all seriousness, I wasn't sure whether it was a bit too camp or what. The Master held him captive for a year, decimated present humanity and used future humanity to do it... and yet the Doctor just *breaks* as he's dying, sobbing and begging him to regenerate? I was kinda like... "Uh, Dude, Doctor, get a hold of yourself!" I get the fear of truly being the last of his kind, but the way that scene played, it felt like it was a slash shout-out more than anything story-driven. "Oh, look, the Doctor wuvs him!" He wants to hug him and squeeze him and love him and name him George. Talk about an abusively codependant relationship, yo.
2a. Besides, it's not like the dude is dead. Come on. The hand retrieving the ring from the pyre? It's probably Lucy, who knew to shoot him for whatever reason. It was probably a failsafe they worked out.
3. Speaking of death... all of humanity uniting for one moment to break the hold of the Angelus network (or whatever it was called....*snerk*) and chant "The Doctor"? ROTFLMAO. Yes, I was moved. I will admit to a sniffle. But, damn, that was so cheesy. Especially when everyone on the Valiant started doing it. And I still have no idea how their combined psychic energy regressed the Doctor and returned him to full power. Not to mention that it's impossible for the Doctor to have explained his entire plan in that one whisper. "Martha, spread my story and explain to everyone that they have to believe in fairies the Doctor exactly a year from now when the Master is on the brink of starting interstellar war."
4. But I did love that the whole thing with the gun and the components was a set-up. Brill.Iant. Because I was sitting there like, "Oh, please, Uncle Rusty. Deus Ex Machina much?" And then, by the time the Master shot the bag I knew it was a ruse. I was just waiting for the confirmation. Martha's husky chuckle was awesome.
5. Martha, Martha, Martha. Sigh. It was a great, great moment when she walked out of the TARDIS and then walked back in to lay her cards on the table about her feelings. I'm glad they addressed that and had her leave him as a hero, a strong woman, and someone who's hopefully going to go find Tom Milligan and proceed to shag him senseless as they heal the world. Martha really brought home the basic strength of humanity, of their belief, of their willingness to survive and fight. I loved Rose and her passion, but she would never leave the Doctor by choice. Martha chose her family, her community, and her calling and it was a great way to go out. I really do hope that they bring Freema back sporadically, though, because it would be a shame to close that TARDIS door permanently. I think with her leaving him the phone, it definitely indicates the door is at least ajar.
6. The fact that David Tennant spent a lot of this episode as a voice actor was interesting. I'm not sure I liked it, that I liked him caged and small and looking like something out of Jim Henson's workshop or the WETA workshop. But it did make his "return" all the more powerful because Tennant bursts with energy and can be so BIG despite being a skinny guy. He's commanding and, again, we see his capability of being loving and being terrifying all utilized. I loved how humanity's fate broke the Doctor. And I think I'm okay with his non-response to Martha's "I Will Survive" speech. He understands why she's got to say it, but what's he supposed to say in response? He's never represented himself to her as anything but what he is. They were friends, professional colleagues, they saved the world together, and they've both got things to do. Hopefully their paths will cross again, but caring too much for humanity, for even one person, can be disastrous for a Time Lord... and for humanity as well. He's got to maintain a balance, a status quo, and I almost think that's the lesson he had to re-learn this season after losing Rose: what it means to be human vs. what it means to be a Time Lord.
7. Is it Christmas yet?
