Excellent question! I'm always excited when I'm not the only one who thinks about these things ; )
The avatars can move about freely up to a certain extent. The higher the integration the further away they can be from their Angel without losing connection. Castiel for example, could use Jimmy to move around Machen, but not much further than its exterior. Zachariah (who had a more highly integrated avatar) could move further throughout the city, but likely not beyond its borders. It also depends on the Angel and how centralized they are. Lucifer was extremely localized because all of his hardware was in the Demons' base. If the Angel itself has a larger wingspan (hee) their radius would be much larger.

Interesting.....so by that theory Sam should have considerable movement giving Lucifer a range he never had before.
