Sam's soul (and Dean's) are obviously pretty special.
What do you want to bet Sam is an unending power source, and that's why he came back soulless? Somebody kept Sam's soul. Maybe it was Cas- maybe it was Lucifer, maybe it was Cas & Crowley working together. Either way- I'm betting Sam's wall is holding back some pretty detailed memories of what Cas has been up to.
Here's the other theory- if souls are literally just "power" like a big ass battery- then maybe that's what powers heaven's weapons
( I have said many of these things before, but they bear repeating!)
in the post-ep chat squishyball had this other excellent , excellent thought: what if Lucifer fed on Sam's soul. Lucifer is an angel after all.
